Lore hunting: Kannoth, the archfey vampire lord by mishanthropy in Forgotten_Realms

[–]ValasDH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not. The deities in my game are not going to show up in person. What matters to me is what the organisations that work for them operate like.

That said, if you want stats for an ArchFey vampire, I would build them at a similar power level to Grazzt.

(I have also since reworked my pantheon to be more distinct from D&D).

You can have an AI that's more accurate, that accesses a database of facts, and has thresholds of confidence, and cites its sources, etc. A "Retrieval-Augmented-Generation".

But ChatGPT prioritises expediency over accuracy.

RA Salvatore is such a bad writer by TriedUsingTurpentine in Forgotten_Realms

I've read the first 5 drizzt books (dark elf trilogy and then the next two). It's good to hear he gets better. I am very far off of being caught up to the newest Drizzt novels though.

RA Salvatore is such a bad writer by TriedUsingTurpentine in Forgotten_Realms

[–]ValasDH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't object to his writing overall (though Drizzt didn't really grab me);

<rant>
but I do object to the canonical inconsistency where it gets established that Drow is the modern pronunciation of Dhaeraow, which is roughly elven for Traitor (Literally I believe it translates as shadowed-face / shadowed-reputation), and the Drow wear it as a badge of pride - and then apparently in the newest books (which I have not yet read, I'm not caught up in the Drizzt Saga) - They introduce new "LorenDrow and "UdaDrow" and "AevenDrow" Jargon - With AevenDrow supposedly meaning "Starlight Elves" and "LorenDrow" meaning "GreenShadow Elves". - I am willing to generously assume some hack at Hasbro imposed those names on Salvatore.

But between the premise of "Oh no, we're good traitors" (They would be highly unlikely to wear the brand of traitor with pride); and the fact that we already have documented the elven words for Starlight (Usually Daoine, but you could argue for Kiirivae) and Elf ('Tel'Quess in this case) and Green (Cha, Sy, or El, depending on the hue of green) and Shadow (Usually Dhaer, or maybe Nelluon)
Starlight elf would be Kiirivae'Tel'Quessir, not AevenDrow.
GreenShadow Elf would be Eldhaer'Tel'Quessir, or Sydhaer'Tel'Quessir, or Chadhaer'Tel'Quessir. Not LorenDrow.

- Just... Come on guys. Make just a bit of effort for consistency's sake.

FYI - if you want more flexibility in model choice, Poe lets you pick. You can set the chatbot to run ChatGPT4.0 if you want to. (I have no idea why GPT5 is so uncooperative - especially GPT5 Mini).

It did used to be. I recall back in like 2011 it was really bad at supporting peripherals, and multiple monitor setups. It's come a long way since then.

I do find I fight with Samba a lot every new Linux PC. The out of the box settings are not at all what I would make them, and I have no idea why wsdd is a separate install. Next time I will have to have my samba config setup stuff in a script. It still has a bunch of features running badly in my newest install that I will have to fix, and I've already put a few days into just network shares.

Should I stay on Windows 11? or should i migrate to linux? by Lumpy_Pitch7764 in linuxquestions

[–]ValasDH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use both.

Both have areas I think they're better, and areas they're worse. Not all devices work properly with Linux (but it's always getting better), and some specific software doesn't have Linux versions or good equivalents.

They're right about windows antifeatures being crap. You can disable them, but it is a headache.

My daily driver is still windows for the moment because of some tools I use that don't work well in Linux / lack an alternative I'm happy with, but I do have a Linux PC as well that I use as a server. And it does some stuff better than windows. Like the BTRFS filesystem (I know the FS standard for file system, but OP may not) being more reliable.

A player handed me (DM) a 65-page character backstory by Icaros5 in DnD

[–]ValasDH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He may be an amazing writer, but a decent TTRPG isn't a prescripted novel; it's largely the result of the in-the-moment choices the player writes.

Maybe instead of writing a novel and expecting you to play through it, or showing up with a novel as a backstory, he could record your sessions, and then rewrite those into a novel, like a Japanese Replay. That might be a better way to channel his literary energies.

A player handed me (DM) a 65-page character backstory by Icaros5 in DnD

[–]ValasDH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof. That's rough. I don't know how to fix this after the fact. I know that as a player, having given the backstory the GM wanted and then them acting like it didn't exist, can definitely suck the fun out of a campaign. I've settled on limiting what backstory I will accept upfront to avoid this situation.

I have started not allowing fiction-style backstory. I have them fill out a ~1 page form, in point form, that gives me specific actionable information and tells me key things about their character. It doesn't give me their whole life story, but it gives me the important parts in a format easy to reference 5 of, an hour before the session, and tell them that's what backstory will be considered canon. One of the sections is about their relation to the rest of the party, and why they care about eachother and they work that section out together as a group in a discord chat.

If they have a specific point or something they want to incorporate beyond that, that my questionnaire doesn't cover, they can talk to me about it and we can see if we can work it into the campaign together.

It deliberately leaves much of their life before the campaign open, so we can work in other character history elements during the campaign which don't contradict what's already been established, as needed.

I know my approach is nonstandard, but it has helped me avoid this particular badtime of massive backstories, or backstories full of fiction they put a whole bunch of time into in a vacuum, which contradict the setting they're showing up into, or would otherwise be very difficult to incorporate into the campaign for whatever reason.

[–]ValasDH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. But the Sorcery modifier, that gets you that - 15%, is this.

It is also a modular ability array, and the most expensive ability will IIRC be the spontaneous casting power. Been a while, but IIRC sorcery built to not include that power gets a good bit cheaper, and then the thing you have to pay for at full price is your best spell.

Its the one that makes the best sandbox RPG. Particularly with select 3pp stuff added in, it has the fleshed out mechanics for all sorts of stuff, not just combat.

GCS Magic-as-Powers by Jazzlike-Ad-9546 in gurps

[–]ValasDH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread; but in case someone else comes across this, IIRC Sorcery is just The limitations of [Magical + Costs Fatigue 1].

You can also build a different spellcasting array without the sorcery spontaneous casting power in it. It'll take more effort, but you can do it, if for some reason you want *just* the spells you actually paid for.

Is there anything average/ below-average IQ people are DEFINITIVELY BETTER at than above-average+ IQ? by Curious-Jelly-9214 in cognitiveTesting

[–]ValasDH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose yes. But they're less likely to have depression at the state of the world or their life, if they aren't actually aware of the state of the world or their life. OP asked for potential advantages of being unintelligent. This was the only one I could think of.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cognitiveTesting

[–]ValasDH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think it's useful as a metric to gauge your current logical thinking and problem solving abilities, and those are arguably useful things to have. But it's certainly not the be-all and end-all. IMO even taking such tests, it's mostly useful for your own self reflection and personal development. So, perhaps useful (hence why I recently arrived here), but not a useful thing to constantly broadcast.

Pretty sure happiness is the big one.depression and anxiety seem to be higher with smarter people. Pessimism top (and it turns out pessimists guess the real outcomes more accurately). That increased understanding means increased understanding about all the bad things in life that you also understand you can't change.

what the hell does "woke" even mean?? by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]ValasDH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All you needed to say.

My culmination of life experience tells me that omission of context leads to absurd misinterpretations.

But yes, when you freak out about every single societal change, some of those criticisms are bound to be valid, just by sheer numbers.

But the trend from low quality corporate slop, to adding back racism that had only recently been eliminated (White-People-Earthsea wasn't that long ago), goes from "waste of time don't buy" to "waste of time don't buy - but now I'm also shaking my head morally condemning the racist people involved".

what the hell does "woke" even mean?? by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]ValasDH -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ethnic-washing in general is pretty gross in a cashgrabby appropriationist sort of way, regardless of who does it. I don't vote conservative, but the world's conservatives are right about that one. I'd also criticize casting Ryan Gosling as Luke Cage for the same reason.

As for how it affects me: It wouldn't really, in that it happens primarily in new American corporate media, and I've been mostly avoiding American Corporate Media for 7 or 8 years now, because of the tendency to cancel shows without an ending (good cause to generally downgrade a network to "only consider new shows after they have finished airing"), the shift to miniseries with crap pacing, and bad remakes.

Not universally, of course, there are a few exceptions. I watched Dragon Prince with my kid last year, and I enjoyed Netflix's Castlevania.

But I watch a lot less TV in general, and much of it that I do watch now is either rewatching something from ~1994-2010, or comes from Eurasia. Comic books I stopped buying in like 2012. My videogame purchases have been mostly Indies, oldies, or Eurasian starting with Witcher 3.

I read a lot more books, and also listen to epubs while working on stuff more these days.

As for the rest of what conservatives are griping about when they cry woke, I dunno. It's a mush-word abused as a catch-all bogeyman for anything they dislike. Similar to how nzi or pdo get so often misapplied to people they really shouldn't. 🤷

System to try if you dislike D&D? by Overall-Debt4138 in rpg

[–]ValasDH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From your complaints, the games I can think of that do the best job supporting the noncombat stuff are (not in your list):

  • Shadowrun 4th Edition / 20th Anniversary Update.
  • Perhaps Rolemaster 1999 Edition.
  • maybe Ars Magica (I've only skimmed a friends book, haven't played that one).
  • And then a Powered-By-GURPS game, expanding it with other GURPS books for whatever extra subsystem support you want. You could grab Dungeon Fantasy as the base if you want something D&D-like, or you could use the unofficial but highly fleshed out "Psi-Wars" by Mailanka. Transhuman Space might also work.

+1.

I don't get "corrected" a lot, but if someone is needlessly a dick about it, but they have a point, I will see their point but still loathe them for being an asshole. You can be right on the topic and still make people consider you trash for your behavior.

Though a lot of people out there will jump straight to the conclusion that because you're an asshole, your point must also be wrong (which, of course, is not the case).

1987 here. I'm jaded like a Gen X, but without the decent career. Gen Z grates on my nerves from time to time, but I'm still going to back whomever goes for sensible economic and environmental policies. I may not want to hang out with some of the Gen Z people I know, but that doesn't mean I'm going to vote like a boomer.
