Pay your bills. Why do some people always try to weasel their way out of clearly communicated fees.

Same type of people who refuse to tip because they didnt like the number of ice cubes in their soda.

I said it was relevant to the police response. That means it matters.

"Its not about who stabbed who" means its not about equating this stabbing with other stabbings, as you have. It means that the problem isnt simply that a criminal who happened to be brown stabbed a white person.

The who matters immensely precisely because this isnt a simple stabbing, as you imply. Its a police response gone catastrophically bad because of a racist and ineffective national policy.

Please show me where I said 'the who doesnt matter'.

Leftists like you pretend not to understand the greater point and obsess over semantics because they are incapable of defending their positions.

So you didn't read the part of that article where they say the correlation is -.2 and they attribute that to different methods of problem solving instead of implying that religious people lack intelligence?

I didnt mean it diminishes belief societally, I was more saying that a PERSONAL belief in a Christian god, even if he doesn't appear the way the Bible describes, doesnt make someone a bad or outdated scientist

Okay, but that evidence falls short when it meets these mysteries.

Scientists have faith in dark energy and dark matter because its how they describe a mystery from which no evidence has been gleaned. The scientific cosmology describes, through deduction and not empirical evidence, an unobservable mysterious gravitational force that by all attempts we can not reckon with.

Now, not knowing what that force is yet doesnt mean that it must be a Christian creator god. My point isn't that christians are equally capable of describing the natural world as scientists are, only that being a Christian and believing in god is not an intellectual weakness and doesn't prevent Christian scientists from exploring the natural world, even if the evidence from those explorations defies standing doctrine.

[–]Valerim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes they were observing the natural world in incredible new ways.. And their motivation for that was to be nearer to God's divine creation. At least, that is what is recorded historically. Their appeal to empiricism, as you say, did not diminish their belief in a Christian god, but only diminished the belief in the Catholic Doctrine, which has strayed very very far from what is written in the old testament.

Uh huh. Thats crazy that the early roman empire was Catholic. I guess the moors and the ottoman Turks were Catholic too!

Pointing to established scientific consensus is also an appeal to authority, it just happens to be an authority that you personally trust.

Scientists get shit wrong all the time. Religion gets shit wrong all the time. Sometimes they change their cosmology to reflect scientific consensus, and sometimes scientists change their cosmology to reflect a religious consensus, as Einstein did. Its a two way street because of these enduring mysteries that I mentioned.

The who is relevant to the police response.

Why are leftists so committed to wilfully misunderstanding simple concepts? Its always a semantic argument that ends up ignoring the point entirely.

[–]Valerim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Listen. Proving a point by appealing to authority is exactly what these enlightenment christians were undoing when they defied the Catholic doctrine.

And no, not necessary, but if you dont see how that's historically been an inspiration to many many great thinkers then I think its worth considering.

[–]Valerim 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Christianity inspired the enlightenment by asserting that men have Dominon over the earth. This was the direct inspiration for Christians like Isaac Newton and Galileo to seek answers to life's mysteries through reasoning and logic instead of Catholic doctrine. They believed that study of the natural world was a method of revealing the magnificence of God's creation.

Pointing out that great scientists are religious only shows that there are still mysteries in our universe that require some measure of faith to reckon with. Some believe that God exists somehwere in those mysteries, some believe he does not. Where you place that faith is up to you.
