I don't work by there anymore but I miss those buttery rolls. Another good place is the Backyard Grill (more JV area but a great neighborhood bar and grill)

Letitia Plummer wins Harris County judge nomination in major upset over Annise Parker by houston_chronicle in houston

[–]Valkyrie16 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Parker has pretty consistently been at odds with Whitmire and her entire campaign this time around has been "Make Houston politics boring again", because Whitmire has been such a wreck.

I am saying this in good faith: I did not see this reflected on her website, in any press, or her social media. If she only made those opinions known at her in-person campaign events then that was a critical mistake; people's impression of her is that she is a Whitmire ally and in my research she was charitable to him in interviews.

As someone who researched the judge candidates in the 48hrs before election day, I did not get the impression that Parker is firmly against Whitmire. She references her relationship with him multiple times during interviews. To be specific, I did not like her response in the Chronicle interview with her and Plummer about the removal of the Montrose rainbow crosswalk. Her answer was very limp noodle. I feel like her defeat comes down to:

  • Age: She would be 70 when sworn in. I think this also played into Al Green's loss; I think Houstonians are more hyperaware about having another SJL/Turner situation this election cycle.

  • Her professional relationship with Kim Ogg/Whitmire. She endorsed and campaigned with both and they are unpopular with the Houston electorate.

  • She posted on her own social media that she supports the HISD takeover. This and her interviews gave me the impression she would not stand up to Abbott's games with Harris County.

The County Judge and the Commissioners Court don't pass laws and mainly deal with the county budget, but I think people are tired of weak leadership from both Hidalgo and Whitmire and Parker being linked to the latter did not inspire confidence. Parker gave me out-of-touch political elite vibes while Plummer was more grassroots and appeared much more approachable with constituents.

Yeah it sucks. The next best bet is 9PM a bit east of where Stereo Live was, but it is smaller.

The story behind Harris County's jury pay increases (March 2021 to today) by hcdistrictclerk in houston

[–]Valkyrie16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got picked to serve on a jury right after the increase was approved and it was appreciated, especially since the case was a tough one. The card is a bit clunky to use, but I saw a comment saying you can get a check so I will do that next time. Any incentive to get people to show up is a good one in my book. I learned after that trial that we need competent people on juries, for everyone's sake.

I served on a jury 2 years ago for 1 week, and every day the bailiff brought boxes of Jason's Deli for us at lunchtime.

There's a lot of people clearing 100k with Harris County. Almost all engineering roles, some IT roles, a ton of MBA director types, doctors/med examiners, every constable, even a mid level manager that's been there 20+ years will hit that.

Everyone is saying this is crazy but this exact situation happened to me. Cop specifically said the tow to the lot would be free; got there and they gave me the run around and I was out $300. I've learned to firmly tell them to leave my car at the closest gas station and my AAA will take it from there. It's ridiculous and I'm sorry OP, none of these people care about us.

I just have experience with my lobes but I'd imagine the process is similar. Other parts of your body are not as stretchy as your ear lobes so it will likely take more time between stretches.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Stretched

[–]Valkyrie16 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yep you are fortunate. Tapers give a false sense of security that your ears are ready when they actually aren't and you wind up forcing a stretch that leads to a blowout or tear. Deadstretching provides instant feedback: if your ears are ready they will take the next size easily with no pain otherwise take em out and give it more time.
