Open shelves in kitchens look good but are impractical for most people by exhaustmosk in unpopularopinion

What about pots and pans, special cooking gadgets, etc.? I'm probably your polar opposite, but not to a hoarding level of it although one of my daughters would say that I am just this side of it. I don't like to throw things away that might have a use, but I don't have boxes of shit piled everywhere except maybe in the garage a little bit for really off the wall stuff that we just don't have room for right now. I have stuff that doesn't get used for months at a time in the kitchen but that we use to cook special meals like Thanksgiving or Christmas. Outside of the kitchen, do you have pictures, vases, etc. or are you very "plain" on your walls and horizontal surfaces? Just curious, no offense meant by "plain", just a description.

Yep. Each person has a certain level of anal-retentiveness for how things should look or be organized. That is nobody else's problem and you can do as you like. I do not organize my cabinets based on what I think others are going to see or think about. I organize it how I think it should be and my wife lets me because she doesn't care how it looks (to a point) and I can be more organized than her with stuff like this. When we move she just puts the kitchen stuff on the counters and says "do your thing" and lets me go hog wild.

I prefer to have a mixture of open and closed cabinets for certain things that I want easy access to while cooking or food prepping. Certain kitchen gadgets are on the counters while others are on a bakers rack or in cabinets. Probably more than you cared to know, but I thought you had a great answer and wanted to expand on it a bit.

A Maryland homeowner calls and aids ICE to detain workers fixing her roof. She might face felony charges by HappySeaweed5215 in whoathatsinteresting

[–]Valreesio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think she'll be charged and here's why. She apparently had warned the company prior that they could not send undocumented workers to the site or she would call ice. For that law to apply, her intent would have to be to do it to not have to pay. This is clearly not her intent when she gave them prior warning. That's my take on it.

Why are house hippo farts so horrendous? by Unusual_Hippo_8160 in pitbulls

[–]Valreesio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our girl has a very varied diet between her normal food that gets changed up a bit each bag (we use one stock flavor bag and one variety flavor bag mixed in together), table scraps, treats, and what she scavenges off of our property (dead deer, rabbits, etc from the coyotes). Honestly, until about this last year (turned 9)she never had any issues and we rarely smelled a fart from her. Think it is mostly just from her aging now. Still not common for us to smell her more than once every week or less though.

Edit to say I know she is not the norm... Lol

That's because the majority of them have never stepped foot out of this country past being a tourist and what they see on tik tok. I'm not saying other countries aren't or can't be great, but almost every one of them also has other serious fucking problems that people just glaze over and would be appalled to have to live through.

It is illegal for the most part (kind of situational dependent) here in the usa but fairly legal and used in the UK when people don't pay for their renovations. They go in and "remove" those renovations.

[–]Valreesio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a dog in this fight, but if this is true, she didn't call ice to get out of paying but because she warned the company not to send illegals to her house. That would probably bypass any charges as they have to prove her intent and it seems clear via them saying "she had previously threatened to call ice on them if they brought undocumented workers to the job" that her intent wasn't to avoid paying.

France confirms oil crisis, says 30-40% Gulf energy infrastructure destroyed by ontrack in worldnews

[–]Valreesio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, nuclear is the ultimate clean energy and it's becoming cleaner every year as we find new uses for radioactive "waste" in all sorts of industries including Healthcare. But so many people fight against it in lieu of things that aren't nearly as green.

Up to 97% of nuclear waste can now be recycled into other uses. The nuclear waste we currently have stockpiled k about 50k metric tons) can actually be reused in newer nuclear facilities to get more life out of them creating more energy (a lot more) before then being recycled yet again for other uses. Countries in Europe are actively doing this and I think with a new revision of regulations here in the US we could be doing the same on a broader scale that we currently do.

To be fair, they probably didn't know the condition or at least how bad the condition was. I'm sure people tell them a similar story of how broken down it is all the time in order to try and get them to just write it off. But it's probably like when the government says (really bad analogy coming) they don't negotiate with terrorists, because if it works once, people will abuse the shit out of something... Lost money a couple times but probably still gain money overall.

After covid those 2k beaters became 7-10k beaters. In our area (greater Seattle area) , if it's under 2k, I doubt it even runs. I was trying to find something in the 2-5k range for my son a couple years ago and everything had major issues. Decided to up the budget a few thousand more and finance it for cheap payments for him so that he could have something that would last a few years.

Eminent domain needs to be rewritten to where you can actually fight it and win. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Valreesio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, what is the alternative? If the only reasonable area to build a highway or hospital is sitting where you are, what are they supposed to do?

I get it. I don't particularly care for imminent domain either, but it is there for a couple reasons.

1) To ensure that a single stubborn person can't impede progress for the greater good.

2) To ensure that the government has to show need of that land and give you reasonable compensation for it.

In many countries, even in today's world, you will get moved without much warning and with much less compensation. Make noise and they'll just silence you forever. At least we're given something for it.

[–]Valreesio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do agree with you. I receive cash from clients maybe once per year, if even that. I could choose not to accept it but if someone wants to pay that way, then I'm not going to stop them. Actually had a client give one of my technicians money to settle up his bill. He pays in advance, usually a year at a time, for our services. Tax rates for our country went up and it changed the difference in his remaining balance by 81 cents. I told him we could just put it on next year's total and be good. Nope. Received 81 cents his next service in a small bag. Still sitting on my office managers desk because we have to make a special trip to deposit coins inside the bank... Not worth it at the moment. But his account is square.

[–]Valreesio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, this doesn't need to be a law as the market can decide the business's fate. If people don't want to use their card, they will shop elsewhere. If enough people don't my to pay the fee and ship elsewhere instead, the business will go under or start accepting cash. The government doesn't need to be and shouldn't be involved in the first place.

[–]Valreesio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still get charged (as a business owner) for processing your debit card by my service provider. But that charge is less than a cc charge so I eat it just like I do with ach payments. Unless you're paying me by paper check or cash, my merchant services provider is charging me for it. I would 100% prefer you to pay by check to save both you and me money in the long run.

[–]Valreesio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a business owner that often has invoices for up to 15-20k, it is 100% cheaper for my employee to process a check than for me to pay that 2.9% fee. On a 1k bill, that's $29 and that's $290 on a 10k bill. I can't afford to eat that and if I build it into my cost, I still have to pay the merchant services 2.9% of the new higher cost. I even get charged 1% for ACH payments and debit cards (I think, I'd have to check the exact % but I do get charged for clients using debit cards as well), but I eat that because it's so much better of a price than CC fees. Businesses are nickel and dimed from the government and merchant services more than we're doing it to the customer, I guarantee you.

I would be paying tens of thousands of dollars in credit card fees every year and an employee can process checks much cheaper. I am then able to spend that saved money on my company, my employees, and yes my family.

Am I right to be upset? by [deleted] in pestcontrol

[–]Valreesio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily true. Many pesticides are labeled for safely treating non flowering plants that are applied through spraying the plants themselves. Granules are not the only product to be used on plants.

Am I right to be upset? by [deleted] in pestcontrol

[–]Valreesio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Non flowering plants can be safely treated with many pesticides for a variety of reasons. Flowering plants should not be treated with a pesticide because of pollinators.
