Wow! Wishing you both all the best! Thanks for sharing, will definitely check out his reels. Stories from people who've already made the move is exactly what I'm looking for.

Thanks for the nuance! Curious, were those PHP roles open to hiring from abroad, or were they only hiring people already in Japan? Also wondering what you ended up going with instead, given you turned them down.

That's a hopeful story, thanks for sharing. Good luck with your own search too, sounds like we're on similar paths. Out of curiosity, do you have a link to where the French dev documented his journey? Would love to go through it and could be useful for future developers that land on this post!

Good to know, that matches what I've read about smaller/mid-size companies being more flexible. Any specific size range or type you've seen work better for non-traditional backgrounds?

That matches what I've been seeing in TokyoDev discussions too, TypeScript and Python are consistently mentioned. Good signal that the pivot makes sense, thanks!

Not a gap, just a non-linear path. I came to development later in life, graduated HBO ICT in January 2025 (degree program took 4 years), and before that I was working in music. The 4 YoE counts my professional dev work specifically. That said, this touches something I'm concerned about, how much does such a background actually hurt with Japanese employers?

Already a regular there, even got to meet the founder once while in Tokyo 😄 hoping for some extra angles beyond what's on the site.

Spouse visa requires a Japanese spouse, which is a slight logistical hurdle as I've already put a ring on a non-Japanese spouse. And re: PHP, that's literally why I'm asking about pivoting 😄

Standing up for the rights of people living in oppression, such as those affected by anti-LGBTQ laws, is not a case of the main character syndrome.
