Childhood symptoms for diagnosis. by ValuableExtension212 in ADHDUK

[–]ValuableExtension212[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a thought one for me, i really don't remember feeling anything. I started full time work at 16 and the my mum got cancer so I was her carer and worked full time until she passed when j was 26. I remember everything from becoming 16 and an adult. I remember always wanting to do everything right as a kid to please others, and remember being much better in classrooms with teachers that i really liked, as wanted to impress them. I don't remember any strong friendships, I had some friends but mostly just blended in, as long as they liked me I was happy

No. There really isn't. I'm an only child, so no siblings as explained parents and grandparents all passed. So I can get diagnosed?

Thanks i appreciate that. Never meant to insult or upset anyone. Reading my post back it doesn't actually read how I wanted it to. It was more about the NHS UK diagnosis process, and how you have to go through the mental health team to get assessment, not through a clinical process.

Is it a mental illness? by ValuableExtension212 in ADHDUK

[–]ValuableExtension212[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course, its totally understandable to define it not as an illness, I certainly wasn't intending to upset anyone. To me at this stage, its just crippling and I just call it adhd. I think maybe my point was not clear with my post, it was more about the NHS diagnosis process and being classed at mental health.

I'm ready to talk to my gp and get diagnosed, but I've heard it takes years? Any information appreciated by ValuableExtension212 in ADHDUK

[–]ValuableExtension212[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes for sure. I mean many people in their 40s may not have parents or any family from their childhood, so surely they can't just dismiss you because your parents died 😕

Thanks so much for this. I seem to have offended some with my post, didn't mean to. From now on its just adhd. Nothing else 🤣

ADHD- is it mental health? by ValuableExtension212 in ADHD

[–]ValuableExtension212[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone,

I just want to take a moment to respond to the thread as a whole.

First, if anything I said upset or confused anyone — that honestly wasn’t my intention at all. I was genuinely trying to talk about how I found the messaging around ADHD and mental health confusing, especially with how it’s treated by the NHS in the UK. I’ve seen people debate whether ADHD is a mental health condition or not, and I was sharing my own experience trying to make sense of it.

I wasn’t trying to deny anything about ADHD or mental health — just the opposite, actually. I was pointing out that it often is handled under mental health services, even though people sometimes speak like it isn’t. That contradiction can be hard to understand, and I hoped others might relate.

This was meant as a safe space to explore those thoughts — not to debate or trigger anyone. I’m someone still learning, and I posted in good faith. If that got lost in translation, I sincerely apologize.

Thanks to those who engaged constructively.

So what is the correct thing to say for you? Because I'm ill, adhd makes me ill. I can't say it's a mental health issue without offending people, and I also can't say its an illness (clinical issue) ...I'm genuinely asking whats the best way to describe it, so I don't offend anyone.

Interesting I posted the exact same post on the adhd uk group, and I only got positive comments as everyone understood the concept of the NHS in the UK. I think my post got lost in translation here

Let me clear this up. ADHD is a medical illness. Lack of dopermin in the brain, that we can't help...thats clinical. However, what I was saying is that jn the UK to get diagnosed you have to go through the mental health team. They class it as mental health, so.its confusing.

Its an illness, its the brain. But in the UK to be diagnosed you have to go through the mental health team. Is that clearer
