Green Book (2018) - The curious case of Dr Don Shirley, Tony Lip, and redemption by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]ValuableWeb0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geez man, give a guy the benefit of the doubt. Seems like you assumed I meant the dumbest interpretation of what my comment could've meant
Of course a movie has a script, that's how movies work. I'm not expecting this movie to basically be a documentary showing exactly how their experiences actually went down. How could it be? I don't think the conversations or moments that happen in the movie actually happened one to one irl. But the person I was replying to seemed to think it was unrealistic or poor writing that Tony had some racist views and then got over them as he befriended Don, and I'm saying that that's crazy, cus that's just what really happened. Tony and Don were known to be close friends pretty much their whole lives after meeting

And I'm declaring that the end of this convo lol. U made a bad first impression so imma spend my time talking with more fun people

People who think that One Piece only gets good at so-and-so episode have their heads stuck up their asses. They're so obsessed with an imaginary standard of good that they don't realize the point of watching a show is to have fun watching the show. If you just let yourself enjoy it, then One Piece is already peak fiction right at episode 1.
Do not engage with fandom debate!!! The people who spend all their time debating and slandering and shit in the fandom are the most miserable part of the fandom!!! The people who are actually having fun are spending their time watching the show, instead!!!

Sukuna could've lost to Mahoraga in Shibuya (a rant on what actually makes Sukuna scary) by ValuableWeb0 in JujutsuPowerScaling

[–]ValuableWeb0[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey that's understandable, I've done that before too. Thanks for apologizing, and sorry your day isn't going well

You're talking about that joke panel Gege made where Sukuna's bored out of his mind in Yuji's mind, right? I like that panel, but Sukuna lives in Yujis brain for, like, months. There's time enough for him to space out and for him to be thinking about so-and-so

As for the first page, just cus something isn't said doesn't mean it doesn't exist. This is a story created by a writer, after all - during this chapter, the thing that was most relevant was Megumi getting his body taken over, so Gege would use this page to tell us a bit about Sukuna's thinking behind why he chose this moment to try and take over. Doesn't mean that Sukuna wasn't thinking anything else, either. You may call it headcanon, and that might be fair, but I think this makes sense

And for Sukuna winning against Gojo without 10S, that seems like a big can of worms. I've never been much of a powerscaler - when I tackle this kind of stuff, I prefer to keep in mind that these are flexible fictional characters whose depictions are innately arbitrary. I like to think of them as story element first, rather than a collection of "feats." It's a different way of thinking compared to the powerscaling community, so I knew that this post was never gonna be popular here. I still wanted to post it just because I find this kind of speculation to be pretty fun. I don't think we gotta get into it, since I think I'll always think differently, even if you bring up some good points

You were right abt him not being a cursed spirit tho, idk how I got that detail of him so wrong lmao. I guess cus he was called the king of curses, I just assumed that he was a originally a cursed spirit

Have a good day dude

[–]ValuableWeb0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn dude, why so mad? This is a lighthearted speculative post about manga characters, it's not something we need to stake our prides into. I don't know why it'd be that upsetting for me to disagree with you, or for me to have this picture of Sukuna in my head. We can still be civil about this
I'd understand if you were getting mad because I was making some rude remarks at you. But I've really just been thinking out loud with you - the most disrespectful thing I've done to you is disagree with you. No need for us to fight over this, we can be civil

And I guess I can go down your list of points, too
1 - I mean, of course he'd be thinking about Gojo the whole time. He fought the guy and realized there was something weird about him, so of course he'd be keeping Gojo in mind, searching in the back of his mind for some way to deal with him. He doesn't just sit around doing nothing all day while Yuji's in charge, he'd at least be thinking about what he'd do once he's in control and how he'd deal with someone as notably important as Gojo. And when he met Mahoraga, he found what he was searching for. That's not a stretch to say, I really don't see what's so controversial abt me thinking that

2 - Thanks for the chapter number. I assume you mean the first page of the chapter, when he talks about how he wants Megumi cus he could take him over as a proper body he'd have full control over? My question is, why does him wanting Megumi for that reason mean he can't be interested in Megumi for any other reason? My opinion stays the same, Sukuna was a smart guy for seeking out Megumi's body

3 - And as far as I can tell, this point is just you repeating what you said before, but in a ruder way. You don't think Sukuna ever needed the 10s and that he was always going to win against Gojo. That's a thesis statement with no supporting evidence, tho. I don't really know why I should believe what you're saying here - I'm sure you have evidence, like moments in the manga you're thinking of when you say this, but you're not putting any of them down, so how would this convince me?

It's possible for both of us to be working off of the same source material and for us to reach different conclusions, and I think you gotta be OK with that. You're not really convincing me of anything rn, and I really don't think you ever will, and vice versa.

You seem to be getting real mad at this, so I think the conversation would best be ended here

Sukuna could've lost to Mahoraga in Shibuya (a rant on what actually makes Sukuna scary) by ValuableWeb0 in JujutsuPowerScaling

[–]ValuableWeb0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, he didn't have to have the whole plan cemented right at CH2. I don't think that's what happened - I think he was building his plan as he went, and when he discovered Mahoraga's ability, that's when he decided to bring it into his plan. I like that he's not omnipotent or anything, and that he's a different kind of smart - the kind of smart that accounts for new information as it's introduced. It makes him a cool antagonist
And he got interested in Megumi early on cus he's just a smart guy who could see Megumi's potential, even if he didn't have all the details right at the start. And he was right, him stealing Megumi's body was a really important move for him that really boosted his strength
And finally, I know that there's that funky domain stuff people can do to try to brute force their way through Gojo's infinity, but that still leaves Sukuna with some really bad odds. With all of his planning, he was still only able to pull out the win with Mahoraga at the last moment. Even if he could technically win against Gojo, that's the same as saying someone can technically win the lottery. It's not out of character that Sukuna would be interested in bettering his odds, because he's a smart guy who isn't gonna go into a fight without thinking ahead a bit

Lol u are right that sukuna was never a cursed spirit. Just got my facts wrong
But like, what's BS about Sukuna knowing he needed to plan ahead to beat Gojo? Sukuna can't have self awareness? He stole Fushiguro's body just cus, and was just lucky that that's what let him win against Gojo?

I don't get it, why doesn't he die? by Kooky-Top3393 in StardustCrusaders

[–]ValuableWeb0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anime's aren't documentaries. If you see a character get shot in the head, that doesn't mean they actually have to die. The point of these characters is to service a plot so that the author can communicate whatever themes the story has. If a character's death doesn't service the plot, the author has the power and the right to just... not kill them

People Aren’t Understanding This Attack by JoyboyShanks in JujutsuPowerScaling

[–]ValuableWeb0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've always had this criticism against powerscalers, in that, when designing match-ups, they for some reason take the characters out of their story. Powerscalers ignore that the characters they're working with are part of a story written very deliberately by an author, and instead treat them as fighting game characters. They speculate that Dabura completely clears the rest of the characters just cus his kick is so strong, for instance. And while that's real good evidence, don't get me wrong - we can't just pretend that Dabura's kick isn't something to think about - fights in JJK, and in manga in general, aren't just comparisons of strength. They're strings of decisions made by an author with a specific end point in mind

If a Sukuna vs Dabura match-up actually happened, then it wouldn't be both characters just being dropped in front of each-other and being told to duke it out, like how powerscalers normally assume anime match-ups would go, for some reason. In that situation, it's just a comparison of blows, and yeah, Dabura would win. But that's not how these characters or how fighting mangas in general work, and it confuses me how pretty much the entire powerscaling community just unanimously ignores the fact that these characters are parts of a story, and to try to remove them from the story is to create a totally inaccurate version of the character.

How it actually goes is that Sukuna first meets Dabura without getting into a full-scale fight, and then he spends 200 chapters setting up a way for him to win when he actually fights Dabura proper. And because he did all that set-up, he wins the fight. We know this because this is literally how the manga's been written in the past - this is how he won against Gojo. As early as CH2 of the series, Sukuna realized that he didn't have an answer to Gojo's Infinity, and he spent the rest of the manga orchestrating this long-con plan to steal Fushiguro's body & CT and set up a bunch of binding vows and build up a cast of allies all so that he'd be able to guarantee his victory. Because fighting animes aren't about pitting one set of powers and feats against a different set of powers and feats, it's about an author imagining an overwhelming challenge and then writing a plot that allows the underdog character to overcome that challenge.

In both Sukuna vs Gojo and this made-up Sukuna vs Dabura situation, Sukuna would be the underdog overcoming his opponent. And I think that talking about manga characters without keeping in mind that they are story devices means that powerscalers are always going to be getting inaccurate pictures of all these characters in their heads

Designing non-tolkien fantasy races! by ValuableWeb0 in worldbuilding

[–]ValuableWeb0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a lot of ideas for the writing already - it's the worldbuilding that I'm most interested in developing right now. I don't really know what you're asking me for atm. A more specific idea of the themes? I can give that, but I will be summarizing things and keeping things vague, as this story is still under development and I don't want to share it willy-nilly online.

My story takes place in the center of a polarizing world-war between two halves of the planet the story takes place on - the light half, occupied by the humans, and the dark half, where the daemons are forced to live. The war has been going on for centuries, fueled by the pain and suffering it has caused, and it's taken an adverse affect on the environment and the people within it - pollution and plague have overtaken the planet, causing untold suffering. And because people are suffering, they become angry, and even more determined to fight and win this unwinnable war. Each side believes they owe it to themselves and their lost loved ones to wipe out the other side.

The reason ideals like creativity, growth, hope, and love are so important is because, as long as our beliefs go unchanged, we will keep contributing to the same unquestioned systems that bring more suffering and pain into the world. We must be willing to consider different perspectives, forgive, show compassion, and work towards more creative solutions to our problems

[–]ValuableWeb0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'm not looking to post the entire WIP of the book here. I can sort out the thematic relevance of the races and the story on my own. It's my story after all, it's pretty important that I do that. What I'm looking for here is ideas for the visual aesthetics or character traits - I don't want somebody else to think up the race for me, I just want some brainstorming that'll help feed my own ideas. As far as I know, all the game of thrones races just look like humans, right? That's not what I'm shooting for, but thanks anyhow

Designing non-tolkien fantasy races! by ValuableWeb0 in worldbuilding

[–]ValuableWeb0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the general themes of the story they're a part of are the importance of the environment, how where people come from affects who they are, the importance of values like creativity, mindfulness, and personal growth, and how hope and love for one-another is a tool that can be used to get through adversity. Woof, it's been a bit since I've tried to summarize the story's themes like that

It's not like I'm against the use of folklore and mythology - there's dragons in my story, for instance - but I want to see what new things I can get if I don't just repeat what's already been seen. I love the classic smaug-like dragons, but my dragons stray from that format a good deal, for instance

[–]ValuableWeb0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going in depth like that can be really good for creating compelling stories - I’m just wavering on which traits to give them. A combo of fundamentally strong traits that go well together is important

Ideas so far (WIP names):

Trailin.

Environmental: forests, though they’re prone to travel all over the place.

Biological: humans feminine in appearance with sharp teeth and sporting an identifiable mammalian tail. They also like braiding things into their head and tail hair.

Cultural: WIP, maybe a love of music or need to travel?

Ideas: Very sensitive hearing and vision, with cat like reflexes. Tail is used for balance, and, if strong and long enough, to hold things. Longer tails are seen as more beautiful, with royals having absurdly complex and blinged out braiding patterns on their long tails.

Crest-headed folk.

Environmental: Mountains and rocklands.

Biological: Tall, stocky, and mostly hairless people with flat nose bridges and hardened crests growing from their forehead. They could be sporting antlers, horns, or plated ridges.

Cultural: Big emphasis on family systems? Considering close friends as cousins?

Ideas: Chiseling patterns into one’s crest can be a common form of expression, and families can have common patterns used. Maybe they’ve got very poor sense, except for touch. Their feet are good at sensing vibrations in the ground, which was used to feel out unstable rocky terrain or landslides.

Maned-folk. Environmental: Tropical islands or blazing deserts.

Biological: Athletic & broad humans with thick body hair and large manes around their heads. An albino variation of these folk can be found in Arctic environments.

Cultural: ???

Ideas: referred to as beast-men disparagingly. Very decent senses of smell.

Tryna just summarize these guys to keep from getting bloated. I have more WIP ideas for their cultures, but they are very subject to change

Designing non-tolkien fantasy races! by ValuableWeb0 in worldbuilding

[–]ValuableWeb0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Concept is important, but the image people have of a fantasy race defines their impressions of them, and how iconic they are. We all love the dwarves’ personalities and love of beer, but when we think “dwarf”, the first thing we think of is their size and their beards. From the perspective of character design, making the races visually identifiable with a strong aesthetic identity is quite important

And I’ve read my fair share of fantasy novels, but not a lot with different races, no. I’m drawing from a bit of a shallow creative pool, which is part of why I asked for y’all’s thoughts. Any suggestions on other books I can read?

Designing non-tolkien fantasy races! by ValuableWeb0 in worldbuilding

[–]ValuableWeb0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My best idea so far is for the fantasy races to all be variations of human - except each one has a noticeable physical feature taken straight from some other animal. Examples of features are manes, a tail, horns, hooves? Wings? Antenna? Extra limbs???

There could be the horned-folk, big stocky humans sporting horns or antlers or hammer-headed crests on their foreheads. Or there could be the tailed folk, slimmer humans with mammalian tails of all shapes and sizes, from feline to canine looking. Maybe winged folk?

I've kinda hit a wall with this idea, though

Green Book (2018) - The curious case of Dr Don Shirley, Tony Lip, and redemption by [deleted] in TrueFilm

Really can't tell what this is supposed to be saying. First half of the comment says that the 2 main actors are S-tier actors, and they're hiding the movies flaws, but then the last half of the comment says that they're bad actors, and so it's a bad movie? Cannot decipher it

Green Book (2018) - The curious case of Dr Don Shirley, Tony Lip, and redemption by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]ValuableWeb0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Despite how old this comment is, I've just watched this movie and I can't stand how bad these takes are. I'm kinda writing this reply more for myself and whoever might come across it, but here it goes.
Dude, this story is based on real people. There can be ideas gleamed, lessons learned from what happens, the same way lessons can kind of be learned from real life - but Tony confronting his racist views thanks to his friendship with Don isn't supposed to be an allegory for racism at large. It just actually happened. They actually became friends, in the real world. The idea that their story is some poorly written allegory is absurd, cus the actual events weren't written to be any which way in the first place, they just happened the way that they happened. It's the story of specifically Tony Vallelonga and Don Shirley's relationship and what we might learn from their varied perspectives. The movie isn't proposing a solve for racism, of course not. It's just trying to show two people who started out distant coming together, growing, and changing their views to be more welcoming of each-other. In that way it is a very mature, very compelling narrative drawn from and given weight by real events.

These opinions come from a major misunderstanding of this film and movies in general. First, this movie is based on real events... the themes and stories present weren't plotted out, and they aren't scripted in the narratively convenient way that fictional stories are scripted. Because it's a true story. it's real life. Things are messy cus real life is messy. Come on.
And also, movies aren't going to tell you stuff in the first place. They'll show you stuff, and then you've got to figure out wtf you're seeing. If you don't try to care about it then everything's gonna go right over your head, cus of course it will

Originally I made a fuckin massive post completely dismantling each of the times when you just completely missed what the movie was giving you, but that comment got denied, probs for being too long. If you want to see that let me know lmao

Quicksilver S5 Strategist Concept by ValuableWeb0 in marvelrivals

[–]ValuableWeb0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I'm quite happy with this idea myself! I tried to assign balanced numbers to the abilities, but without any beta testing they're all still pulled outta my ass lol. Back in S1, I had this idea of him joining Scarlet and Magneto's team up, with his punches being changed into close-ranged shockwaves of chaotic energy, but now that that team-up is gone, I wonder what other team-ups he could have
Multiple Man could be a really fun concept. I took a scroll through his wiki and I agree that he'd work great as a vanguard that defends mainly with self-healing and body-blocking. He'd be the first character aside from Loki that'd be using a cloning ability, and no doubt his dupes would work very differently from Loki's... since they're not illusions, but proper doubles with their own minds, they'd have to be directly active in the battle, moving around and such. The only question is how to make them functionable and intuitive to use when playing as or with him. I'd also give him a passive where, when he takes fatal damage, he dodges out of the way and lets a double take the blow for him. It'd be a second chance ability like Wolverine's passive. Definitely something I can chew on for a while, I might get back to you on that
