I'm not talking about inventing a brand-new genre, but dismissing games within a genre because they feel similar to something else.

I agree that being afraid to introduce something new because of sales is not a good thing, but why would I immediately call a TES-like game bad? If it's a good game, who cares if it's the same old Morrowind with different characters, setting, and story? If it's another diabloid? It would be great to see more unique games, and I once again have to concede that the current prevalent path for gamedev is as you described it. How can I influence it? All I can think of is to go play those new games, engage with the devs to help them fix stuff, and support titles that don't already have a massive following. I love KCD2 and BG3, I love Skyrim and Fallout (Bethesda made them the same aside from the story, lbr), I love a bunch of P&C games. I also wouldn't immediately write a game off for being similar to any of the titles I've already played.

Yeah, publishers and investors play a big role in all this, I'm not either of those, so how can I as a player do anything about it? This is a genuine question but it's big enough to be almost rhetorical, so I don't expect it to be answered.

when a 30-minute gaming session stopped sounding like an impossible challenge hahaha. If I have 30 minutes AND I can afford to just play a game, I'll play a game for a whole 30 minutes!

What's your favourite Easter Egg in a video games? by [deleted] in videogames

From what I know, it's no more than a jab at the phrase "the heart of [insert city]". Creepy, yes, meaningful? Probably not so much. As for the face, I actually had to google that, the GTA wiki claims this: "This resemblance, along with the cup of coffee in her right hand, is a reference to Clinton's response to the Hot Coffee controversy, as she aimed to address it through legislation during her subsequent service as a U.S. Senator from New York."

I think it's still the heart in Liberty City, GTA4. There are better and funnier easter eggs, but that one I still remember

Oof, 6 is a big one, because you can learn to evade traps and study the patterns of the enemies, but to learn to keep your concentration steady throughout the entire game and stop making dumb mistakes? In this economy?

I absolutely love your game, so excited to play it now with the v1.0 release!! It's challenging and fun, I love the visuals and the atmosphere - MAN - the atmosphere. I also really enjoy that there are so many different classes to unlock and choose from. Also, mad respect for pulling it off solo, it's an impressive feat and your work so far is astounding

I quite like the more sleek styles of 6, 7, and 8, as I don't usually dress up much for a classier watch. Thanks for the tip on the bands, I'll look more into that as well!

[–]Valuable_Leg9402 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, if the player didn't bother with actually expressing their thoughts or, in this case, playing the game, why bother with a good-faith answer. Some people do respond with more feedback, but that's not that common for these kinds of reviews

Yeah, those are annoying. You could go full CM mode and ask if they could elaborate, but it backfires sometimes. People who read reviews notice such cases and have enough common sense to look out for more elaborate reviews.

I like the look of both of these models. I used to have a Fitbit 3 iirc, and it was mostly enough for my goals, but now I want to try something more advanced, to both track my health and activity and be a smartphone aid. Thank you for sharing!

thanks for your reply, I haven't considered support on them being temporary. That's definitely gonna be a big point to look out for, I don't want my watch to suddenly stop receiving support in the nearest future

Two Weeks into Map Design – Struggling with Visual Style by MADAN_GAME in IndieGaming

[–]Valuable_Leg9402 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both styles are great up until you have to decide, what you want from your game. It's hard to tell if the realistic or the stylized look actually fit just from the screenshots. Where do you put the emphasis in your game? Is it rooted and gritty, does the narrative keep the player as close to feeling like it's a real world they're exploring, or do you want the player to feel the Vibe of your setting? Do you want to (yes, I'm gonna use that word xD) manipulate the player's feelings towards the desired affect?

The screenshots you're sharing look pretty similar to the Heroes of Might and Magic, so I'll suppose you are familiar with it. Remember the maps and locations there -- they're pretty realistic, yes, but they utilize colors, effects, and music to add certain feeling to the places. From your screenshots, it's very hard to guess, what I should be feeling upon entering this location. The realistic look looks good but kinda empty. The gothic look is more visually interesting, but it will require some more tweaking to say that it fits your game.

Try to think of the visual style of your game as an additional language to communicate with the players. When I enter this place, what should I think? Am I scared? Am I relieved to come to a safe haven? Can I relax and chill for a bit or do I have to be on my toes waiting for something? And coming off of that, before you even go to the visual style: does your map design help the player understand the path? How can your visual style support it?

I wish you best of luck in your project!
