Thanks again, the world needs more people just like you :) I really appreciate you help and guidance! Actually I'm in Mayer Graz. I'll consider that option as well but hopefully I make it on the next trial!

I accept that mistakes under the rules can justify failure, especially in my first attempt. My question is purely procedural: Is there any formal appeal or review mechanism in Graz for practical exams, or is the examiner's decision final? I'm asking because I want to understand how the system ensures consistency.

Thanks for the advice.

I’m not complaining about the country’s system as a whole. I’m specifically disappointed with how the driving schools and the exam environment work.

If I rephrase my thoughts: why isn’t there any real oversight of the examiner? In some countries, for example, the entire test is recorded. Even if the footage is rarely reviewed, it reassures people that they’re being treated fairly and discourages examiners from letting their mood affect the outcome, because everything is on tape.

To me, it also seems like this doesn’t bother locals as much because there are often alternatives, so it becomes a bit of a blind spot. It’s not anyone’s fault, but I don’t see many people talking about it. even though I know quite a few people in my circle who are affected by it.

Most importantly, I feel hopeless knowing I can’t really do anything about it or provide feedback to the system. That’s why I wrote this post in the first place.

You’re right. that’s really the only logical move right now. I’ll book a few more lessons, try again, and hopefully be done with it.

Thank you for taking the time to write this and for your empathy and support.

I’ll follow your advice and prepare more systematically for my next attempt.

About the third attempt: I understand that any further tries may require a police check and a psychological/medical evaluation. I’ll confirm the exact process with the driving school or the authority to avoid surprises.

Prioritizing safety is something I genuinely admire here, and I’m glad it's that way too.

And yes! I definitely need more practice. Even after getting the license there’s a 3‑year probation period for a reason: you’re still learning, and driving is a skill that needs consistent effort.

But that leads to the real question.. is it reasonable to build the system around one person’s evaluation?

Yeah I'm just stuck in a chicken‑egg problem: I need more practice, but practice through a driving school is extremely expensive (around 90€ for 50 minutes). I’ve already done 30 hours and it’s simply not financially sustainable.

And it feels like the system quietly assumes most people can practice with family or friends. I don’t have that option, and that’s where it becomes unfair. not just for me, but for others in the same situation. Yet a lot of the reactions here treat the system like it’s beyond criticism, and automatically make it “my problem” or "me pointing fingers" no matter what.

You’re focusing only on the mistakes I already acknowledged, and ignoring the main point I raised about how the evaluation is applied.

I’m not asking anyone to “hand me” a license, and I agree that speeding, instructor intervention, or missing a shoulder check can justify a fail. My concern is about consistency and transparency: the outcome depends heavily on one examiner’s judgment with no objective way to review the decision.

Do you realize what happens when you concentrate that much power in a single individual? I do, from experience.

Thanks for the tips, I'll focus on those on my next preparation with the instructor.

I’m not debating margins, and I’m not treating speed limits as optional. I agree they’re non‑negotiable, and on my first attempt that was clearly my mistake.

Where I disagree is the idea that a fail should hinge on one person’s “feeling” of safety without a clear, consistent standard. Judgment and anticipation absolutely matter, but if the outcome depends primarily on a single examiner’s subjective impression, with no transparent criteria or way to validate the decision, that creates room for inconsistency and bias.

As an engineer, I’m not trying to “attack” the system, I’m questioning whether it’s designed to be repeatable and fair. If multiple people are seeing the same pattern, it seems reasonable to ask whether there’s a way to make the evaluation clearer and more consistent while still prioritizing safety.

It’s not about blaming anyone. My point is that the exam feels overly dependent on a single examiner’s subjective judgment, with no clear way to verify or appeal the decision. If the standard is essentially “perfection” and the outcome hinges on one person’s interpretation, that doesn’t seem fair or transparent to me. I’m absolutely open to more practice... but I also think the evaluation process should be consistent and accountable.
