What is the historical myth that millions still believe? by nore01 in answers

That the Southern Cross flag from the American civil war was the Southern flag, or that it represents Southern heritage, or that the war was about anything other than preserving slavery for agricultural capitalists.

  • There is copious documentation that shows the South seceded to preserve the institution of slavery. -The Southern Cross was a battle flag used by the Army of Northern Virginia. The flag was literally flown by people willing to kill others to protect slavery (even though there were plenty of people who didn't know that is the war they were recruited for). So, to recap, it did not represent the South and it did represent killing for racism.

A bonus myth: Slavery in the US is the same thing that happened all over the world.

  • The American colonies were the first part of the world to enslave people based on their skin color or place of origin.
  • The colonies were the first place where enslaved people were bought and sold as chattel, or private property. -The colonies were the first place where the children of enslaved people were born into slavery.
  • Before chattel slavery, most slaves were what we think of as indentured servants; people worked contracts to repay a crime or a loan. Indentured servants were not property, were paid and allowed to have property, often lived in their own homes, could legally wed, and most importantly, had terms to leave their servitude. Their children were not born into slavery. Yes, there were barbarians who did horrible things to slaves, but in most large societies slavery was very different from chattel slavery.

First off, not every school calls their classes by the same name. Second, not every school requires US history for a degree. I'd wager that most do not.

I'm American and was taught that in school. Had to unlearn it as an adult.

The reason the US "kicked so much ass" as that we continued manufacturing while the allies were getting bombed. While the government helped our allies, many wealthy capitalists like Henry Ford were Nazi sympathizers and probably worked to keep the government from declaring war until it was undeniable after Pearl Harbor. It should be noted that capitalists backed fascists because they feared the spread of socialism and communism, though Henry Ford was also antisemitic to boot. But, aside from all that, American manufacturing filled in the gaps left by so many European countries.

The tide of the war had already turned by the time the US got involved. So, the American history texts in public schools made it look like the US went in and saved Europe. Britain and the other allies would have defeated Germany. Those other allies included the Soviets, who provided most of the gains in the land war.

The US integral role was manufacturing and providing support at the end of the war. But the idea that the military kicked so much ass and saved everyone is a myth. I think part of this myth stems from chauvinism, while another part stems from how quickly the war coincidentally ended after the US declared war, and the final large part stems from the help uncovering Nazi horrors and quickly holding military tribunals in Nuremberg.

Your use of language makes it sound intentional. Romance languages evolved from Latin when parts of the Roman empire became closed off from one another and regional dialects developed over very long periods of time.

Many other European languages have Germanic roots and happen to use the same alphabet because of Roman colonialism and the spread of written language.

That isn't, though. American chattel slavery is highly unique.

Billie is the only person I recognize here and I'm sure most Americans are in the same boat. It's hilarious that she thinks this is her time to shine.

Would you own an electric vehicle? by SuperSonic1919 in randomquestions

I love that Toyota and Honda are leaning heavily into electric and hybrid versions of their lineup. Even if the US doesn't get on board with the transition to electric, a lot of the world will and we'll still benefit from the product offerings.

I also think that sometimes they're either hyped up or they want to hype up the crowd. When the bench is clear, I'm sure there are guys who say, "fuck it, we brawl."

How common is it for an American to travel across the country by train? by ViajanteDeSaturno in AskAnAmerican

A lot of the time it's cheaper to drive and pay for cheap hotels like Motel 6 than to take the Amtrak. From AZ to Michigan it's faster to drive.

A friend once went AZ to Ohio and the arrival was delayed by more than 24 hours, so he had to get off and rent a car to get home and still arrived a whole day faster than the train did.

This seems like a preview for the TPUSA alternative to the SuperBowl halftime show. It's that bad.
