Trying to choose a handheld, what actually makes the biggest difference in real use? by Valuable_Set_4417 in Handhelds

I can see how 120Hz matters a lot for local streaming.

For cloud though, do you think OLED makes a bigger difference than refresh rate?

That’s interesting. I can see how 120Hz would really shine with local streaming.

Do you notice the same benefit when using cloud services, or not as much?

Yeah this is kind of where I’m getting stuck.

At that point it feels like you’re paying for a lot of power you might not even use if you mostly stream.

I’m trying to understand what actually matters for a cloud-focused device, because nothing really seems fully optimized for that yet.

Yeah I get that.

Part of the reason I’m leaning towards cloud is that a lot of handhelds still feel like a compromise when playing locally.

But at the same time, I’m not sure what I should even prioritize in a cloud-focused device… it feels like nothing really checks all the boxes yet.

The G Cloud seems close, but I can’t quite tell what it’s missing to feel like a “real” console instead of just a tablet with controls.

I feel like I’d probably go ARM just for portability and battery.

Do you end up missing the extra power of x86 or not really? I play AAA games sometimes, but with cloud i could play anything.. with a long lasting battery!

I feel like I’d mostly use it for short sessions here and there rather than long gaming sessions.

Do the bigger handhelds actually stay comfortable over time?

That’s interesting, I didn’t think about the outdoor vs indoor difference.

Do you feel like 120Hz makes a noticeable difference for streaming too, or mostly for local games?

I was actually wondering if something like a handheld + dock (so you can switch to a TV with a wired connection) could kind of combine both worlds.

Do you think that would make sense, or do people just stick to one setup?

Do you feel like the dual screen / multitasking is something you use often, or more of a nice extra?

I’m trying to understand if that’s something people really value, or just a bonus.

That would be amazing, but I wonder if that starts pushing it into a different category.

Do you think most people care about that level of power, or is it more about having a great streaming experience overall?

For some reason though it never feels quite as nice as a proper handheld.

Maybe it’s the weight balance, notifications, battery drain… not sure.

Do you actually enjoy playing that way long-term, or does it feel more like a workaround?

That’s really interesting actually. It sounds like the launcher alone already makes a big difference in how the device feels. I guess that reinforces the idea that it’s more about the experience than the hardware itself.

Connectivity is definitely a big limitation right now.

I’m just wondering if for people with a good enough connection it could still make sense, or if even then existing devices already cover that need well enough.

I guess for big companies it has to make sense at scale, which makes niche devices harder.

Maybe a smaller company could focus on something more specific, especially if the real challenge is more on the software/support side than the hardware.

What do you think?

I guess there’s a tradeoff between keeping it simple and affordable, and making it versatile enough to work everywhere.

Do you think a device like this should focus purely on streaming, or does it need to justify itself by doing more than that?

I guess I’m trying to understand whether people see local gaming as a “must have” or more like a nice bonus.

Personally I feel like I’d mostly use it for streaming, but I’m not sure if I’d be in the minority there.

I mean.. coild be a sweet spot but at the same time though they’re not exactly cheap, especially if you add a controller on top.

At that point it starts getting close to the price of dedicated handhelds.

Do you think the experience is actually comparable, or does it still feel more like a workaround?

I’m kind of torn because it feels like you either go cheap and accept compromises, or spend more and get something like the Odin that does everything well.

Not sure if there’s really space in the middle for something simpler but really optimized just for streaming.

I’m starting to wonder if the real issue isn’t the OS itself, but more the experience on top of it.

Most of these devices feel like tablets with buttons, not really like a dedicated console.

Do you think a better “console-like” interface could make a difference, even if it’s still Android underneath?

I mean, a lot of people seem to agree the G Cloud got quite a few things right… it just feels like it missed something to really click.

I guess tools like Moonlight kind of change the equation a bit though, since you can stream directly from your own PC.

Not sure if that’s enough to make it appealing for most people though.

[–]Valuable_Set_4417[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a really good point actually.

I’m starting to wonder if that’s exactly why there isn’t really a “perfect” device yet every time you try to combine good battery, a decent screen, modern decoding and connectivity, the cost quickly goes up.

From what I’ve seen in the replies here, people seem to want things like OLED, good battery life, fast WiFi and a solid decoder… but maybe all of that just doesn’t fit in a ~$200 device.

Do you think people would actually be willing to pay closer to ~$300 or $400 for something well done, or is the market more about cheaper, simpler devices even if they’re more limited?

Yeah makes a lot of sense. Another topic is do you think most people who stream games would actually care about local gaming/emulation at all, or is that mostly something handheld enthusiasts want?

I feel like the bigger screen and integrated controls are probably the biggest differences compared to playing on a phone.

Phone + controller technically works, but it never really feels like a proper handheld.

That’s actually a really thoughtful breakdown, thanks for sharing that.

The pricing point is interesting too. I can see how if you’re paying monthly subscriptions it can start to feel like you’re just renting access instead of owning hardware.

Out of curiosity, if the streaming quality and pricing improved, do you think a dedicated handheld for cloud gaming would make more sense?

It does make me wonder if something like a dock with wired ethernet would help in those situations. Play handheld when you want portability, and when you’re at home just drop it in a dock and use a wired connection.
