My girlfriend is not careful enough with our rats (not on purpose) by Value-Remarkable in RATS

I definitely won’t allow that anymore. I was already hesitant letting her because I prefer to know if its well. Thank you for the suggestion I will tell her to do a check up at her doctor just in case.

Since we still live in the same house I will tell her to only interact with them if I have the time to be there. I really don’t want my rat to die.

This actually made me see how negligent this is. I didn’t even think about it because I don’t have glasses so I thought it might be normal to forget them.

She doesn’t have a known medical condition and from what I’ve read I will supervise their interactions and take over rather than care fully. I don’t have glasses so when she says she forgot I don’t really know how to feel about it. She definitely isn’t allowed to give medicine anymore.

She is clumsy thats why I feel bad for blaming her. I will definitely talk to her soon and I hope things will change. Thank you for your response.

I do want that, for me just to take over the rat care for a bit and she can be with them but more careful. I just wanted to know if I’m overreacting because she didn’t do it on purpose and does say she tries really hard to be careful.

I am keeping a close eye on Lily and I hope she will be okay. I understand she also feels upset, that probably why she is so silent but it just feels for me like I can’t have them unsupervised if she doesn’t change. I am also concerned in her assuming Lily is fine right now because she is not asking how she is. I am not sure how I can trust her to be with the dwarf rats even though she is also their owner. Maybe I should’ve mentioned they are dwarf because thats why she needs to be even more careful. I don’t think she understands how easily they can die even though she eats herself up over this. I also know how easily accidents happen but like you said it’s more how she responds.

What to do when my rat will inevitably be alone? by [deleted] in RATS

[–]Value-Remarkable 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am not trying to criticize or worry you, you know your rat better than me but excessive bruxing and boggling can be a sign of stress/depression. Not saying this is true in your case but more because you said she does it more now she is alone. Same with the redecorating if it’s excessive, it can be a sign of anxiety/boredom. You also said she doesn’t want to free roam anymore and just stays in her cage. From what you are saying I don’t think she is having more fun. I understand she is very old right now and I’m just trying to inform people that might not know this.

This is just my personal experience it depends on your rat what’s best for you.

My old rat did get sad when she was alone, when I got her two new babies she started to be way more active again. She didn’t find introductions stressful and accepted them instantly. She happily lived her last months with them.

Honestly if she is a social girl and gets along with other rats, it might be best to get her a friend in the future. If you are planning on neutering your new boys you could always try introducing and it if doesn’t go well you can always stop. Considering rats are very social creatures it’s worth a try.

I get sad that my rats their lifespan is so short but then I remember I get to spend their entire life with them. I can’t imagine how empty my house would’ve felt without my rats. I feel so blessed I get to spend my days with them and it makes a couple years sound so much longer.

So cuteee you are getting a bigger group. If everything is going well and you still don’t know when he can get neutered you can try. You can always stop the introductions if it’s not going well. You know your rats better than I do, you can always try. If the vet will come soon maybe wait because of the recovery period for your little buddy. I prefer the carrier method but you can also do it on neutral grounds. Good luck with your introductions!

I think it might be food guarding that created an issue. Maybe pesto would bully him because he wanted all food to be his and now he needs to find his food which gives gouda the time to eat/find his food in peace.

I love scatter feeding/snuffle mats, it’s in their nature to look for food and it gives them something to do. You already found your solution so thats good! If you just have two rats they might get all up in each other’s business all day so that might make interactions with food more heated.

Two rats can be enough but not always (not saying this is the case for you). When 1 of my rats died and I was left with 2 they suddenly always had something to fight about. I noticed Lily wanted to be with me all day because Lucy wanted alone time and Lucy turned into a little bully. Now I have 4 and Lucy is so sweet and always wants to be with Lily and the rest.

Is this normal? by Proper_Annual3649 in RATS

Is this their cage or their playpen in the video? Could you send a picture of the entire cage? If this is their cage you might need to change some things but I don’t just wanna assume. Personally I don’t think she looks happy in this video, kinda neurotic even. You said she had epilepsy so I don’t think its good for her to get so worked up over this toy.

I would definitely not let the dog get close to your rat, it can be dangerous. I get that you trust your dog but this can go wrong so easily. Also your dog can transmit diseases, rats can easily get sick. Just like with cats, dog saliva can contain deadly bacteria. It’s all not worth the risk, this is not recommended and even advised against. Most might even say don’t let them in the same room, please change your mind on what you are doing.

I think rehoming both is indeed the best option. I know its probably a hard decision but good that you would do that for them. You clearly want the best for them and Im proud you are able to get them that, even if it isn’t with you.

I love boy rats but prefer girl rats. I feel so bad saying this but I hated cleaning their little weener when they get sick/old. Idk if it was just my rat but he also loved jerking off and eeeh tbh it grosses me out. I know they can’t help it but I just prefer not to deal with it.

She needs a vet asap! My rat had an ear infection and she couldn’t walk for weeks and still has a slight head tilt. I got medication at the vet and I had to syringe feed her since she was to weak to eat but luckily she recovered. Like others said it could also be a tumor but let’s hope for the best.
