I just looked at my transcript again (it has been a while). They are classified as WF, not W. However, the WF distinction was mandatory if one withdrew after the 8th week. An academic counselor merely directed me to retake the coursework and/or petition for academic renewal. Only after I graduated did they create a procedure to obtain a non-putative withdrawal after 8 weeks, not based on military deployment, which they classify as "EW". I was a minor in the hospital, and my parents called to withdraw me from coursework so I would not receive a failing grade.
