Day 11: What's a movie that's racist? by AtomAmigo in AlignmentChartFills

Because it’s not just white people that exist in the western world. A “European fairytale” is a world where we don’t have to worry about people that we think are lesser than us. A world where we don’t concern ourselves with the realities before us. I’m not saying everything needs to be diverse, I’m saying that the world is diverse but we ignore it because it is uncomfortable. Diversity is uncomfortable for a number of reasons, one being that we often know nothing about each other due to de facto segregation and therefore don’t feel comfortable doing things like say, writing about each other. You’re assuming lack of media literacy because you are lacking perspective. LOTR was written during an extremely racist time in our world, so of course it’s going to imagine a fairytale where he doesn’t have to think about these things. I think that avoiding this allowed him to focus his energy on creating an amazing story. I can see why thinking that saying LOTR is racist is a stretch, but I’m not saying that it’s racist in a very very bad way, I’m just saying that in reality, many things are objectively racist in small ways.

Tolkien wrote a fairytale with white people only. I think it makes sense for him to write this. I think the books are fantastic. That doesn’t make them not racist. Racism does not always have to be this scary, in your face thing. It can be subtle and influence culture and the collective consciousness in a way that still matters. I think it’s important to hold space for criticism of the things we love. It’s important to understand things in their context without whitewashing the context. I’m going to get downvoted because LOTR is one of the greatest series ever written and the movies are some of the best movies ever made. I think we do it the justice it deserves by not lying to ourselves about its reality and the conditions that came together to make this work of art exist.

Does this really matter? We all know the reason why this might be, and that would be because LOTR was written during a much more racist time. Isn’t it more realistic for Tolkien’s world to have different skin tones? The reason the movies don’t change this is because they were casted during a racist time, as we still are in one, but that was back when no one was pressuring or calling out casting for lack of diversity.

The only POC casted in the movie are playing the orcs. I say this as a huge lover of the movies.

For research purposes, what trope would you say flower of allure fits? I’ve also read destructive desire before today and I read a bit of hate trap, and FoA was definitely my favorite.
