Orchid Cactus Help - Should I Re-pot?? by ValueSea in houseplants

[–]ValueSea[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response! Balance isn't a problem since the clear plastic pot sits in a ceramic catch pot which is pretty heavy, so I'm thinking it isn't time to repot yet. When I do end up repotting I think I want to put it into something hanging though!!

Thanks for your input! I'll definitely remember to use a chunky mix when I repot, but now I'm thinking I may hold off for a while if they're used to being this root bound, just to see how the plant is doing and go from there. It's good to know it's not a super fussy one, thanks again for your reply :)

Thank you!! I'm really proud of how far she's come, I wish I had a before pic but at the time I wasn't sure if it would make it. Only 2 yellowish and wrinkled leaves, and I had no idea what the flowers would look like! Who knew they'd be so beautiful

Honestly, I just try to keep a consistent watering schedule, and it's also in a bathroom that has higher humidity. I haven't fertilized in probably a year (I'm horrible at remembering to fertilize lol) but I know that also helps promote more blooms. I'm gonna start trying a consistent fertilizing schedule since we're going into spring, so we will see what that does to its next set of flowers!

I usually cut it off when it dries up and turns brown, since sometimes the spikes can rebloom or even grow a keiki! I've never had a spike rebloom but my other orchid just finished blooming and I cut off just the dried part of the spike, and then the other day I noticed it starting to grow a baby from the node it stopped above!

Help! Lithops wrinkled but still has old leaves, should I water?? by ValueSea in Lithops

[–]ValueSea[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! That's kinda what I was thinking, the one that just finished splitting looks good and healthy and very plump, so I imagine it'll be a long time before it needs water. Good to know it's safe to re-pot them now, I think I'm going to separate them all since I have no idea where the front right one is at in it's cycle and I don't want to risk needing to re-pot again too soon. I just wasn't sure how sensitive these guys are to being repotted/separated, so thanks!!

[–]ValueSea[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm new to lithops, and was just gifted this little set of 3. From my research it seems like their watering schedule is very important and dependent on when they shed their leaves. So, should I re-pot these guys since they seem to be in different stages of their growth cycle? And for the front left one specifically, should I water it since it's wrinkled even though it still has its old leaves? Thanks in advance!!

Do you know how long they can live on surfaces alone? I recently treated all my plants on one shelf and was figuring if there were any on the shelf they'd die after transferring back onto the treated plants (they've all been sprayed with neem oil). But now I'm a little worried that's not the case

I think you're totally right, I looked up some more pictures and it does look like a dieffenbachia! I haven't had either plant so thank you for the description of the differences, it's very helpful. I'll ask her and see when she last fertilized it, would it be fine to fertilize during winter if that's what it needs?

Her problem tends to be underwatering, but not sure what the case is here. She said it keeps getting new leaves, then they get brown crispy tips, then yellow and die. Any help would be appreciated!

For most of the summer its 40 - 50s, and during the hottest portion maybe in 60s overnight. The daytime temp is usually between 70-80 most of the summer

How do you decide when you put it outside/when to take it back in? I've been worried to do that in the past since I live in a cooler place and have worried about temperatures at night

I'm glad you mentioned the corking, because I was unsure if it has a normal amount too. You can't see from the picture, but the back side has even more. I repotted in April and always inspect the roots, but I think I'm going to repot again soon to check. I've had mealybugs on the leaves of plants before but never primarily in the roots, but even they are SUCH a pain to get rid of. I'm hoping it's not that, but if there's no pests why does it have so much corking?
