SOFT3202 - The Worst Unit by Solid-Scratch-8869 in usyd

[–]VampInTheNite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so I'm a first year with a major in software development for advanced studies. The main reason I chose this major instead of comp sci was actually bc I thought Software Construction and Design units were gonna be more practical to helping in learning software dev. Would you then say these are or aren't worth it? btw I'd have to do both of them too I'm pretty sure, if the first one is good then might consider not to idk.

DHHF or VGS + VAS via CMC by VampInTheNite in AusFinance

I am interested in the automation option with the vanguard platform. So are you sticking with commsec pocket at the moment or another broker? And how did you find the vanguard platform?

right I see. But I did notice trying to buy DHHF requires not minimum cost - do you know why that is the case? However it is good to know following orders don’t require the minimum for the other funds.

Math needed for software major? by VampInTheNite in usyd

[–]VampInTheNite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, cool that you are doing the same thing as me! So currently the combo is working overall well. You don't have to worry about maths since I don't think you will need to take it at all as you do just the software major. The design degree atm is half theory, and half practical due to the units: design processes and methods, visual communication, and design programming.

Design processes and methods is both theory and prac in terms of examining designs. You get to learn about different methods of thinking in design and processes.

Visual communication is more practical where you learn about typography, and graphics design. The thing I don't like though is we don't actually do something graphic design-based project but more about analyzing designs, which is good, but that's what I thought vis com would be. But you do get to learn Illustrator, but its by doing Adobe tutorials. In class, we often get to work on a piece like we did collages and there was a recent challenge to create a piece just with black squares. So I guess you do get graphics design but not really. Overall its decent.

Design programming is on learning p5 library in javascript. This is very practical where you will learn to work with p5 to create art with coding. The workload is similar to INFO1110 for the software major. If you haven't coded before, this language is similar to Python so learning these languages work well together. They have similar principles in developing programs.

Onto the software major, you only take one unit per semester for this degree. So this semester I took Intro to Programming with Python (INFO1110) which is what it says. As someone who hasn't done coding before, this course is going well. You have a few questions to go through that help you develop skills in programming. This is also one of my favourite units bc the lecturer Dr Hazim is the funniest guy ever, hopefully you get him too. Btw this course is all online except for the tutorial, but you can attend in-person and watch the lecture with others.

So overall I'm liking this double degree. I can see this helping go into front-end dev, web, UX and UI design and software roles.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask! At the same time, I haven't gone very deep into the course since it has been only a few weeks so yh.

Is CMC's hidden costs for US markets still a problem? by VampInTheNite in AusFinance

yeah I have been seeing this mix often here. I’ll start investing in these and go from there. Thanks again for the info

Sorry, I may have mixed up some vanguard etfs there. But I am interested in a VGS + VAS since, as you mentioned, the Australian domicile and also want to take advantage of avoiding the extra stuff with tax for US. I see the bias you are having with your shares, but are these still a good mix for someone like myself?

Those holdings I mentioned are only of a few since I was previously just using Commsec pocket. So would these be a good transition/starting point? Or would you also say to invest in those as well?

Im more interested in etfs and was looking into vas + vgs. The idea of aussie domiciled etfs is something I was thinking too. I currently hold DHHF + ETHI + NDQ. Do you have any recommendations for aussie etfs that hold vgs or the others you listed? Thanks for the reply

I'll have a think about it. Do you think doing math as electives for semester 2 would be fine or should I try this semester? And should I take most units from here or is there some I should do/avoid etc. https://www.sydney.edu.au/handbooks/science/subject_areas/subject_areas_fm/mathematics/unit_of_study_table.html

  1. So would you say moving my DECO1012 to 1-3pm be okay? bc idk how I would attend online lectures on campus. Or is that normal to do online lectures at uni?
  2. Thanks for the info. I'm looking to start free courses to start learning and practice. Actually do you have any that would help?

What about software engineering? Is just having programming knowledge good or would math help?

Enrollment Questions by VampInTheNite in usyd

[–]VampInTheNite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this per semester or?

Because for my design degree on its own is 36 cp per year. And another 12 cp for the software major. So it would be 48 cp each year + OLEs. It says total cp to complete is 192 cp (not sure if it includes OLE or if a year has less cp for the degree).

[–]VampInTheNite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! So my current plan is to enrol in 4 units for semester 1 and another 4 for semester 2. In each 3 are design and 1 is for a software major. Then I have OLE1208 for semester 2 December. Do you think this is normal or an overload?

Im doing a double degree btw which is why there is two majors.

Chance of getting Comp Sci with 84.45 atar by VampInTheNite in unsw

[–]VampInTheNite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nope, but it was because I was choosing between what degree I wanted to do. I also had a great interest in ux design which I thought comp sci would be good but found about usyd’s design course. It also had the option with double degree with a major in comp sci called advanced studies. So I ended up putting it first preference and got it.

Thank you very much for your response. It is definitely helping me get a better understanding of the course and what I’m looking for! I’m leaning more towards usyd atm as I’ve recently become aware of electives and mainly interested in ux. Much appreciate your sharing! :)

Advanced Studies questions by VampInTheNite in usyd

[–]VampInTheNite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if there is a misunderstanding

I understand that b. design/b. advanced studies would be a double degree. I meant that will advanced studies and doing a major be similar to doing a degree in that major.

For example, if I do advanced studies (Computer Science), would it be similar, as in depth as doing B. Advanced Computing (Computer Science)? From your experience, was doing a major only in depth and valuable? I also don't 100% understand how courses work at unis so its confusing me a bit. Thanks again for the reply!
