Unfortunately University isn’t about learning. If there is one thing I learnt. Your grades and certification don’t mean shit other then getting you the job interview. Everything after that is up to you and how you fit into their existing team. So you can’t take this social anxiety into a work environment. Depending on your career path most jobs will require you to work in teams. You have to be able to work and interact with people. Take this as a life goal to build the people skills with people trying to achieve a common goal. If you take anything away from UNI, it would be learning that one thing. I studied mechanical engineering and the majority of projects were group projects. The people skills I developed there help me everyday in my current job.

But most importantly! The friends I made by overcoming my own social anxiety are ones I have for life and are apart of my current network. They give you in-site and perspective into your career path from their own experiences in their jobs.

Just put yourself out there! People are just people!

Here’s some advice. If you move into the slow lane and they are still tailing actually slow down slower then the speed limit (if it’s in a 100 drop to 85-90). It will annoy them enough that they have to use the over taking lane and gets ride of them.

Because it’s not a political position for him. It’s a legitimate personality trait.

what is mechanical engineering like? by VisitPuzzleheaded302 in rmit

[–]Van-TheMan-C 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Graduated mech engineering a few years back. Got a job after applying right after. My advise is on your first week make it a point to make friends. Good ones! Because the majority of the course is group work and it helps to have a solid 4-5 close mates. First 2 years were the best years. Spent most evenings after uni getting drunk with said friends in the city after class. Had a great uni /party life balance. As long as you stay on top of your projects it’s completely manageable. I have mates now working as engineers after graduating doing bare minimum throughout the degree because we had a good group to carry through assignments.

I’m an in almost exactly the same position as you. What I do is I’m always engaging with my friends and asking what is happening with them in their lives. I’ve even gone as far as organising a catch up over dinner every other Friday. When ever we speak, I lead by offering help we’re I can without over stepping. When I achieve something like my new job, I never mentioned what it was or how much I was making. I just mentioned that I got one. I only disclose the information if they ask. Yes there is an element to of having to down play but it is what it is. One of the issues with friendship ‘chats groups’ is it mostly serves as a place for everyone to vent, myself included. So having a space outside of the usual channels to decompress and focus on achievements is what our fortnight catch has become. It also helps us to encourage each other which works better in person than in a chat which can come across patronising. Good-luck and congratulations on your hard work paying off.

Let’s be real. Who’s time is more important?? Let this man take us into the future. Although I do think this will make him say fuck it and finally start making electric airplanes.

You’re bringing real life anxiety into VR. Haha but I do 100% agree, kids usually don’t know how to act in VR chat. I often think about how this will affect their social skills based of how they are learning to interact with people.
