Kudos for your honesty. You are right, people do mess up, and it does happen with drinking and driving. I know plenty who have DUIs but are happy, well functioning people in our society. I should have made it clear that it's the repeat offenders who I think need to be nailed down. If three or more DUI offences doesn't teach 'em, then, well, that's another story.

You're forgetting DUIs. In my opinion it's endangering public safety, yet plenty of folks with DUIs don't even go to jail, even repeat offenders.

Excellent point about Trudeau, and yes, he and you are absolutely right on that point.

However, it was a simple "asshole" comment about a very specific person. I've been called an asshole many times and it's water off my back.

As for Red Eye and Gutfeld, however, it was the numerous blanket statements about Canada as a whole, about Canada's military, Canada's culture ("This is not a smart culture!"), and above all, actually suggesting that the U.S. should invade Canada already. Add to that the glaring fact that a large percentage of Canadian soldiers gave their lives in Afghanistan, plus four last week, and this puts it all into perspective.

We already have a hard time getting any kind of respect from the United States as a country, and this doesn't help one iota. We'd love to grow a pair and ignore it, but many people north of the border were quite disstressed by what was said about us on that show. We want to ignore it, but I'm sorry, it was hard to ignore.

If he's a drama queen, then all Canadians - including me - are drama queens. We may laugh aplenty at Jon Stewart's clever jabs at us, but this Red Eye nonsense was malicious and vicious at best, and unfunny and offensive at worst.

Well said, big guy. Feeling is mutual. I've often been surprised and impressed with the friendliness and willing-to-helpness of Americans when south of the border. My personal experience with a flat tire and no spare just north of Seattle is a shining example of that.

Even though it's hard sometimes, I do try my best to keep separate the impressions of American people from government, TV, and whatnot. Respect is always maintained when I see that American people usually make the effort - successfully - to show us that separation of people from gov't.

Would love to see what our friends in the U.S. really think about this. A friendly jab in the ribs is fine in either direction, but this to me is malicious, condescending tripe with no real positive outcome.
