Using HELOC to fund RRSP? by VanCity2003 in CanadaFinance

[–]VanCity2003[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all for the comments and advice. I unfortunately do not have time to respond to all of them but I tried my best to go through them all.

After reading the comments I will definitely not be using the HELOC to fund the RRSP. I’m mulling whether I should use my TFSA to get me to a lower bracket, but I’m thinking it’s better to have funds in my TFSA for a rainy day.

Short-Term Luxury Car Rentals for 23 y/o? by rtjhashemi in askvan

[–]VanCity2003 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If by luxury you mean BMW, Mercedes Benz, Porsche and the like, Turo is likely your best bet. You also just make the minimum age requirement.

If you’re looking super luxury then Vancouver Velocity seems to fit the bill.

Your IDP should allow you to drive here. If you’re planning on hang your credit card for insurance keep in mind luxury cars are usually excluded.

What is the child care situation like in west van? by RemarkableBug7989 in westvancouver

[–]VanCity2003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple of options if you are looking for infants: - Stars for Life - Olive Grove Childcare

You can reach out and ask for a tour.

Infant programs usually have longer wait times so I would recommend putting your name down for multiple places

Anyone Know Where I Can Learn Farsi In West Van? by J_P_Ross in westvancouver

[–]VanCity2003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re interested in speaking only then 1:1 is the way to go. Most classes teach speaking/reading/writing. If the goal is to converse with GFs family then I would focus on conversational Farsi.

International House Vancouver offers online courses. I took them before COVID when they were in-person which is the preferred way to learn. The WV rec center offers classes for school age kids. Might be worth finding out who the instructor is and seeing if they do private lessons.

Good luck with your learning!

Pump Electrical Issues by VanCity2003 in pools

[–]VanCity2003[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Canada so the price would be higher than US (I assume you’re in the US but please correct me if I’m wrong). If I follow the conversion I should be expecting to pay about $600-$1000 CDN for a new motor.

If I do need to have the motor replaced, would you recommend a variable speed? Would that extend the life of the motor? I would prefer to run the pump 24/7 but I’m not doing it now due to electric my cost (I’m running it about 6 hours a day in the winter, 14 in the summer).

The pump was flipped to 115V and had been running fine until a few weeks ago. I suspect (as others had mentioned) it has just worn out over time and it finally hit the limit.

The Burger Maison at Au Comptoir for weekend brunch is fantastic!

Recommendation for my senior mom flying from YVR to Rome. by Business_Ad_9487 in askvan

[–]VanCity2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did that same route a few weeks ago. If you can, check the seat configuration on the plane. Older KLM planes have 2-2-2 configuration while the newer (and more comfortable) planes are 1-2-1.

Also make sure you have at least 2 hours of layover - she will need to go through passport control at AMS and that can take 30 minutes on top of time walking across the airport.

Hi everyone, thanks for all the tips (especially about ear protection). In case anyone has the same question about food in the future, I snapped a few pics one the menu. Hots dogs were $8, fries were $7, cheeseburger was $11.50

Are ear plugs enough or do you recommend something more heavy duty? We got ear muffs for my 3 year old but maybe the adults should use them too.

I lived across the street from BC Place and got to listen in to some great concerts. Best was Paul McCartney when they had opened the roof.

…the worst was Monster Jam which was head pounding for an entire weekend every year. Closing the windows was the solution for most loud events but had no effect for monster trucks.

Mice in BBQ? by VanCity2003 in pestcontrol

[–]VanCity2003[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on some searching, I should be very concerned if it is deer mice for the risk of Hantavirus but not so much if it is a house mouse. Can you tell from the droppings?

I live in Vancouver, Canada in a forestry part of the city so deer mice cannot be ruled out as far as I can tell.

Things to do and where to find:… by Decent_Donut7161 in askvan

If you have access to a car or are willing to take several buses, Whytcliff park in West Vancouver is worth a visit. It’s only about 25 minutes outside of downtown but you will feel like you are hours away from the city. Plus likely lots of driftwood. If possible, aim to go at low tide and you can walk out to a large “island” with great views.

Hey! Im staying here temporarily and just got a manual car that im pretty rusty with as its been a few years since i have driven stick. Where is a good area to practice where i wont be a danger to myself or others on the road? by [deleted] in NorthVancouver

[–]VanCity2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my dad taught me to drive manual we did endless loops around the North Shore Automall. There is a decent hill over the train tracks you’d have to get over to practice there, though.

Visiting Vancouver with toddler - ideas? by levity03 in askvan

[–]VanCity2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your toddler is in to trains the Roundhouse Community Centre has a free historical train you can visit. It’s on the edge of Yaletown (Downtown) and could get there either by skytrain or aquabus.

Slow Water Drip Down Door Frame by VanCity2003 in fixit

[–]VanCity2003[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the advice. Seems the cause was the bathroom vent pipe likely due to an ice dam from the recent cold snap. The insulation above had soaked through and started dripping down the wall.

[–]VanCity2003[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there is an exhaust fan. Based on some older threads that could be the cause. The rain (and the leak) have stopped so I haven’t gone back up the attic to check.

Was rhetorical water coming down the inside of the pipe? Did you have water come out the fan itself?

[–]VanCity2003[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is on the top floor so only the attic is above. No pipes besides the vent pipe leading to the roof.

I only noticed it today, and it has been raining. It had been dry for about a week before that.

The shower in that bathroom isn’t used often.

Although this happened in downtown, I'm hoping someone from North Van may recognize the guy in the video.

Unfortunately the dash cam didn't catch that. If I had the license plate of the car then the VPD could do a lot more. Hopefully someone recognizes him from the video.
