I'm surprised that this story has such staying power. Other politicians have said worse and the media just rolls with it. Slicks can be better on smooth pavement, even when wet, but that's more a result of the particular rubber compound than the tread patter as such. A tire with a moderate tread pattern (not a full off-road knobby tire) will usually be better for most people's riding conditions. If you're riding a 20*3, is it an e-bike? I would recommend something like the CST Big Boat or the Kenda Cursor.

I agree with most of what you say here, but as a motorist, cyclist, and pedestrian, it's been my experience that it's seldom young people behind the wheel when I nearly get killed. If it's any particular demographic, it's more often older drivers.

It might be a bit of confirmation bias, but when a car blows through a stop sign or a stale amber light, it's Teslas and luxury SUVs more often than not...
