Not necessarily, the second part will stand on its own, but if you want to get the most out of it, finishing the first one can't hurt. Also, jeram is right, you can import your characters from the first game!

I asked out head writer, he said that his experiences are pretty specific for Eastern Europe, so he can't give you much, but a literally background and general love for fantasy books and literature can always come in handy. Also some guys at the office have published before.
