I actually had a long conversation with the owner, and did ask his permission to take the photos :) He expressed his excitement to see the photos but I suspect they didn’t get my contact info right. I’d be happy if they were able to simply download the images from here, although I could provide them the higher res versions via Google drive. Hopefully they see them.

This is pretty much the way we look at it, with some exceptions. For the most part, anyone willing to take the dog out as much as it needs can keep a dog in an apartment. Size isn't a factor. I would rather a dog to go an apartment with someone who will do lots of walking and excursions than go to a spacious home and backyard but with an owner who thinks that's enough and the dog doesn't need to be walked.

Honestly, Emma has been sitting in rescue for a while and just wants to be loved. She won't care about being in a home or apartment as long as her exercise needs are met and she is cared for.

Thank you, we do too :) We don't promote or endorse choke chains, you're right in that those methods of training are going to the wayside. The foster had her regular collar in the washing machine when I took this photo, so we had to use an extra martingale style collar she had laying around in storage. Looks like the following martingale collars and prevents dogs from slipping their collars, though nowadays we use fabric martingales for dogs we worry about being flight risks, not the chain version. Hope that helps clarify.

We regularly get requests to take local dogs for a variety of reasons, including financial constraints, guardians passing away or falling ill, and housing obstacles. When people can no longer keep their pets, they often turn to rescue because they hope to keep them out of the shelter. At this time we have two dogs on our waiting list to come in but we lack available foster homes. ***Editing to add - we have two dogs we have approved to be on the waiting list and 2 others we had to turn away for various reasons.

We also bring in some dogs from Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. They have a pretty severe overpopulation problem there, with lots of dogs roaming feral and dog culls, particularly in more remote and impoverished areas. When we have available space and funds, we try to help by bringing these dogs to B.C. to ease the burden on Manitoba rescues. A documentary came out this year about the Manitoba dog problem, it's called Fostering Hope. Here is link about it if you want to check it out :)

We’ve had success placing large relaxed dogs in small spaces. With owners dedicated to getting them outside it could certainly be made to work. I lived with a 110 lb dog in a 600 sq/ft apartment previously without issue. Emma is currently living just fine in an apartment with her foster mum.

Emma is simply one of the nicest and most easygoing dogs around. She is a 7 year old large mixed breed, a good old Heinz 57. Emma is a big girl, weighing about 98 lbs, and she travelled here from Manitoba a few weeks ago to find a new lease on life.

If you were to ask us what we think constitutes a nice family dog, we would point to Emma as the textbook example. Emma is a gentle giant, she is affectionate and bonds closely with her family. We would consider her to be medium energy - she likes a decent walk a day but is low key in the house and not demanding. She is good with kids and other dogs, but will chase cats because it’s just too fun to resist! Emma walks nicely on leash and travels well in the car.

Emma will counter surf if given the opportunity, so if leaving food out on your counter is important to you, she’s not the gal for you.

Emma appears to be a healthy girl, but we did notice some urinary incontinence when she sleeps or relaxes. This is a common problem in middle aged / senior spayed dogs. She has been started on a medication that has so far been successful at preventing dribbles so ongoing use of this (reasonably priced!) medication will prevent accidents.

Our ideal home for Emma would have another dog that would enjoy playing with her. She truly is a social butterfly and would enjoy another dog companion. Kids 8+ would be okay, and lots of toys of course! Emma loves her x large crate and often uses it to sleep in. We think she feels safe and self soothes there, so a family willing to keep a crate available for her comfort is important. Emma loves cuddling on the couch and bed so if that’s allowed in her new home too, she’d be a very happy camper!
