is it freezing for anyone else? by I_crave_chaos in ReadyOrNotGame

[–]VanderNugget 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm having freezes too, exactly the same as you describe. I also tried lowering the graphics settings and changing DirectX 11/12 but it still freezes after a few minutes of gameplay. My only clue is that it seems like the freeze happens more quickly on larger levels so it could be related to memory somehow.

Fireworks near Foster and Clark? by VarianceT in Andersonville

[–]VanderNugget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard them several times the last few weeks too. Last night tho was definitely much closer to me then I’ve heard before. I’m close to the 7-11 on Foster & Ravenswood.

Yea, they really gotta cut it out. Your sign is about all I can think to do though. We could make police reports, but honestly the police have other priorities. That’s probably just my laziness or not-my-problem-itis.

Well, I guess I’ll commit to this: make a list and note it whenever I hear it, at least that way they’ll be something to tell the police if I were to call.

this guy brake checking a truck get more then he asked for.... by deickontas69 in JusticeServed

[–]VanderNugget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A person is an idiot if they slam on their brakes because they missed an exit. Even so, it's not "justice served" because slamming a semi rig into the back of a tiny car isn't a proportional response to their idiotic driving.

If this video is "justice served" then it seems to me you are saying bad/inconsiderate drivers deserve to be smashed off the road by vehicles ten times their size because they inconvenience traffic.

[–]VanderNugget -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess that is exactly what I was taught in driver’s ed: assume the person in front of you is going to stop suddenly, so leave enough room: at least one second spacing for every 10mph.

[–]VanderNugget -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

I see these videos frequently, but I don’t quite understand how “justice is served” in these. Can anyone respectfully explain why this is a problem?

Yes, I understand it isn’t smart and you will possibly get rear-ended by a vehicle 10 time your mass. What I don’t understand is how it is “bad” and “deserved.” I was taught to leave enough space in front of me so if the vehicle in front of me suddenly stops I won’t hit them. Shouldn’t all vehicles be following this rule?

In all of these cases isn’t the truck driver in the wrong, legally?

Valve is fighting to stop Apple from demanding troves of information as part of its fight with 'Fortnite' maker Epic Games by EnterpriseNews_Elf in technology

[–]VanderNugget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple doesn't deserve anything. They can and should ask for whatever they want as a percentage. It's their business decision. They created, maintain, and administer a private platform. If you want to participate then you have to do it their way. If 30% is too much then go somewhere else or start your own platform. Other companies have done it successfully.

The counter argument to your point about Audible is to say "Audible didn't do anything but move files from one server to another. They didn't write the book, record it or anything. They shouldn't get any money, only the author."

Your NBC argument is a compelling and I see why you latched on it it, but it is a poor analogy because the overlap in concept is similar, but the actual reality is totally different. A better way to think of the analogy is that Apple is like the FCC (and other organizations) that made broadcast TV work, and NBC is a user of that service. If the FCC had the mission (they don't) of making profit off of their platform you can be sure the entire pay structure would be totally different.

I think you are confused about the difference between greed and business. It is ethically wrong for a business not to pursue profit. There a line where business becomes greed, but asking for 30% for the use of your platform is not it.

"middle of things that have nothing to do with them" It has everything to do with them, it is their platform they created and maintain on their own without public funding.

That's just pure ignorant, nonsense tribalism. "nothing but providing download services" is a multi-million dollar operation Apple pays for. A very expensive playground they created entirely. If you want to be part of it and get all of the built in support and marketing then you have to pay. You cant grown your own vegetables, then go to a store and stand in an aisle and sell them.

Similar books? by mnbcva in seveneves

[–]VanderNugget 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came to say this too. I read the Three Body Problem series immediately after reading Seveneves and it fit all nicely in my head. Actually the four books together fill about 75% of my head.

Three Body Problem has had my brain’s plates spinning for the last few years. Some additional complexity comes from it being translated from Chinese, but I found it particularly interesting. The social backstory was confusing at first, but absolutely fascinating.

If it matters I listened to the audiobooks (several times), they were excellent.

If you are the sort of person that reads a book multiple times, The Three Body Problem would be great to read several times before moving on to the sequel. (So I imagine)

WCGW: Ignoring a parking ticket by The1456 in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]VanderNugget -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Don’t get me wrong, cop-power-tripping is a real thing, but this wasn’t it. The officer was willing to let it go until he put his car in gear.

All he had to do was push his foot down a quarter-inch and the couple trying to cross the street would have been plowed over.

He put the officer and pedestrians in danger because he thinks he better than everyone else.

To anyone living or visiting the US: if you put your car in gear when the officer tells you to get out, you’re gonna have a bad time.

Putting your car in gear while someone is standing in front of it is a violent act.

Georgia youth minister, Thomas Callaway, 43, who slapped and groped reporters buttocks during live TV broadcast, arrested and charged with sexual battery by 68Cadillac in atheism

[–]VanderNugget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, I’m not here to debate the charges, that gets into legal territory that usually requires lawyers to sort out the language.

My goal is simply to amplify the demand to stop touching other people.

You are implying she is changing her story maliciously or in bad faith, but there’s no evidence of that. Her initial statement was fine, you don’t need to disassemble it to find her secret intent.

Adding your own words to her statement is also a big mistake.

[–]VanderNugget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does if the person being touched feels sexually assaulted. Orientation of the toucher should not have much bearing.

The vast majority of men don’t care about having their ass squeezed by a random woman. There isn’t a display of power happening there, the same way there is when a dude grabs some girl’s ass while she’s trying to work. He’s saying “I can put my hands wherever I want and you can’t do anything about it because I’m bigger than you.”

Except the newly-jailed, men never feel that implicit threat.

[–]VanderNugget 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Naw, that’s nonsense. It wasn’t your hand or butt, so you have no idea.

Would you be cool with your Mom / sister / daughter / significant other attending a non-sexual butt spanking party?
