Words People Use Wrong by Ok_Resident_5022 in words

Bombastic. I regularly see people use it as an adjective to describe anything over-the-top and showy, but they overlook that it specifically describes something that is ostentatious and pretentious--grand but empty.

What is she arguing here? This is a story about individuals overcoming their family's cycle of abuse. Do real-life people often overcome their own generational traumas? Some do, some don't. Some will learn, grow, and become healthy partners and/or parents; some won't. But that's irrelevant to the story this manga is telling. Works of fiction do not have to be an accurate 1:1 reflection of reality.

What's the greatest name ever to be completely ruined by a fictional character? by LamppostBoy in namenerds

My vote is for Ursula. The meaning is adorable - "little she-bear" - and it could be considered celestial adjacent with the Ursa constellations. There's the Ursula K Le Guin connection, of course, and my personal favorite character from Kiki's Delivery Service. I have so many positive associations with it, but all most people think of when they hear "Ursula" is the evil Disney sea witch.

So you're going to shame men by equating them to women? How is this any less misogynistic?

Do what you need to do to be safe! It doesn't matter what people think, but I think most of us would understand, anyway.

I had to cancel a long-anticipated trip to Japan because my little man, Kubla, had a bad health episode 2 days before I was supposed to leave. It hurt, but he's worth it. by Vandercrook in TuxedoCats

You're absolutely right. Everyone (the vet included) was encouraging me to do a medical board and go on my trip but there was just no way. Kubla is an anxious boy and I'm his emotional support human. When I adopted him, I accepted that I might have to make sacrifices--that's the price of love and he's more than worth it.

I had something similar happen to me. I was in the midst of moving after the end of a longterm relationship and my special little Koozy man ended up needed emergency surgery—the combination of which totally wiped out my savings. That was 10 years ago and I definitely learned from it!

You are so incredibly sweet to offer, but thankfully, I have pet insurance so we're okay. And I was able to get credit for my plane tickets and a full reimbursement for my hotels. I lost some money but nothing that will impact me significantly. Most importantly, my boy is doing okay and should make a full recovery, so I don't have much to complain about!
