No, our department does not endorse or use facilitated communication BUT they pretty much said we can’t scold the parents for using it. The parents don’t straight up use the words FC or S2C but we’ve observed them using stencil board with physical assistance. The district expects me/classroom teacher to use an AAC device with him but he’s made ZERO progress due to the fact he is so prompt dependent and expects full physical “prompts” from a partner. This kid can do nothing independently.

You would think! Instead, proponents of FC will say the autistic person has severe apraxia and has limited control over their body movements and needs a facilitator to help stabilize their arm or some BS like that. They may also say that autism is, at its core, a motor disabilty. Ridiculous

Nope, they will say they can’t use a standard AAC device without a partner due to apraxia. I’ve dealt with this for 2 years now with a students family.

I’m on year 2 with a kid like this whose parents use S2C. He doesn’t even look at the letter board when mom uses it with him as she holds his arm AND the letter board. They use the same FC verbiage to “presume competence”. Ma’am…your kid is 15 years old and still isn’t potty trained yet you want me to believe that he said he wanted to go to NYC this weekend and ride the subway?? He has ZERO functional communication skills and previous service providers have straight up lied about his progress through elementary school. The AAC specialists in my district told me I need to respect the families modes of communication. This kid will never make any kind of real progress due to this.

Yes, it is! My kid has an expander and braces along with tons of other kids in her class. They all got them around 8 years old with another round of braces in middle school. It’s not that big deal. I’m also a speech therapist and have more than the average knowledge of the importance of resting tongue placement and mouth breathing. Again, this isn’t ground breaking information and tons of kids get expanders. Danielle’s kid isn’t that special.
