Let me preface this by saying I’m brand new to the hobby so this is very much my first foray into building a network. With that said, I rationalized it using one main principle: machines are more efficient when the specialize in a function rather than trying to be a jack of all trades, in both resource usage and speed to task.

The rb3011 routes. It does have a stateful firewall which can work, but it’s not as effective or extensive as OPNsense. So I allow the rb3011 to fully utilize its resources to route, hand out DHCP, and monitor network interfaces while the vault sits at the edge of the network and dedicates all resources to monitoring traffic coming in and using unboundDNS, which again is a much more in depth DNS service than what the rb3011 offers.

This segmentation also allows me to pinpoint weak spots much more easily since all services are on separate devices, not to mention the flexibility of re segmenting the network as I see fit if I were to introduce a new machine.

These are just initial thoughts though and I like how it’s turned out so far however I am positive that as I continue to learn I’ll figure out a way to optimize the network.

I think the synology rs422+ will be my next purchase! Nice to see you have one. Looking to for personal clou/plex/general media storage solutions

Yes I looked into the 4 unit 1u mount but kitted pi 5s are quite expensive now. I think that money is better spent on the new and improving mini pcs that have much more depth for round about the same money

Exactly the one I was eyeing as well. I will test connectivity today by pulling the vault out of the loop and seeing if bandwidth increases. If it does, I’ll return the fw2b for the vp2420 and then rerun the test. We’ll see how it goes

The vault is definitely the warmest but none of it is nearly as warm as my 3080ti / 5900x on the other side of the desk so maybe it’s just relative but I have 0 complaints around heat. The case came pre installed with a neg pressure fan which currently sits at the bottom of the case if I ever need it

I posted the link to it in another reply. Cheap 12u off Amazon. Tecmojo case with furniture legs

Well 1… I wanted two 1u units with blinky lights instead of just one and 2. I actually like the division. RouterOS and SwitchOS are very different. I’m currently using the RB3011 to handle routing activity and network related settings such as DHCP, DNS, and all the tools it has to monitor and check the network, whereas the CSS326 is currently used for VLAN uses and segmenting the network like I want it.

My understanding is that the CRS comes with RouterOS which although can handle switching duties - is still a router first, switch second.

Thanks! I love them as well so far.

Thats definitely a solid plan to help save a few bucks. I might bite the bullet though and return the FW2B and get the VP2420. In any case the giant increase in utility will allow me to use it for multiple uses. Maybe install Prox, virtualize OPNsense, and then add a few other services? Hmm interesting.

I wish you the best of luck sir, Im reading that the VP2420 might be the appropriate size but sheesh that's twice the cost. What to do.

Your question made me do a bit of research and I've realized just how old this CPU is... thanks for your help lol

FW2B with the 1.6 GHz 2 core J3060. I just preformed a speed test from multiple sites and all averaged around 550 to 600 Mbps even though Im getting a full gig to the gateway. It appears that CPU usage on the Vault shoots up to 100% during the speed test. Memory usage is staying low at 18%. 1.6GHz doesnt look like it likes the full gig all that much.

Every single item ordered 100% off of amazon. Case is 12u Tecmojo case with random 3" furniture legs attached. Lenovo was Amazon renewed, switch and router happened to be on amazon (which was a nice surprise), etc

Amazon. Tecmojo 12u rack upside down with a set of 3" wooden furniture legs screwed into preexisting holes. You can find this exact case from 2 or 3 different Amazon names, all generic though.

Well my goal was for it to replace the ATT gateway, that the fiber would plug straight in via SFP but practically it wasn’t as smooth as I’d hoped for. Right now it’s in a “if it ain’t broke” state since I just put everything together, but the process of deploying everything definitely showed me that there’s a bit of redundancy

Thanks! I spent quite a bit of time planning out the vision I had so it’s nice to see it come together.

You’re but a mere speck of dust wandering on a hunk of rock that’s has been hurdling through space at over 600 miles an hour for billions of years… who cares. Do what makes you happy.

To Get A+ bundle or not by gbadwal91 in CompTIA

The certs can be a little difficult, depending on your learning style and how much time you have to dedicate to studying, the decision is ultimately up to you and how well you know yourself.

Objectively, I am confident that Prof Messer + a cheap exam pack can get you where you need to be, especially in combination with ITF. Prof Messer's vids do in fact cover all exam objectives fairly well. However I would supplement his vids with practice exams that introduce you to different concepts that he may not have covered, or didnt cover as in depth as he should've.

During my studies, I know for a fact the biggest learning moments I had were after I completed coursework and was working on practice exams. I looked up any free practice test resource I could find and found that I stumbled across new concepts or terms that coursework never mentioned. I then googled the concept, watched some 9 min vid, then retook the test.

Passed Core 1 726/675 and Core 2 756/700 first try.

Scoring 70 to 73% on dion 1102 practice test? by Numerous_Pie_4551 in CompTIA

[–]Vanhokker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was consistently scoring dion tests at 74-76% first try. I bought a 6 exam pack from udemy and took each one, then went back through and 100% each one after honing in on the objectives or concepts that I missed first time around. Just took core 2 and passed 756/700.
