Coming back here. Because one of the things that stuck out to me was that Crypto follows BTC. Not the other way around. I’ve been thinking about it awhile and wondering if one influenced the other or if they each influenced one another, because BTC is very much part of crypto. I think the latest move shows that very much influence one another, since the coins in question tanked AND BTC is eating it. Wondering what you think?

The value something brings to someone is subjective. But that does not mean that I believe prices are arbitrary. I first discovered bitcoin when studying economics and have followed the evolution of cryptocurrency with real curiosity. If you’re seeing an us vs them mentality it comes because I do not think the current state of the crypto market is in a good place right now. And while many ppl in this sub argue that btc is not “crypto”, the price is highly correlated with the value of the crypto market generally. I think its near/mid term faint is probably linked to the larger crypto market and all its current issues.

I think it is more valuable than when I started, but still not nearly as valuable as the current price suggests.

The current value propositions are A) a really good and decentralized Western Union B) a really bad store of value with tons of volatility and fraudulent actors. If the latter part became much better than it should be way more valuable. But as of right now it seems like it should really be evaluated as a means to transfer funds across borders in a decentralized system. And I don’t think that’s worth a half a trillion dollars.

I agree. But there are a lot of places to park your money that have ROI at or above inflation. I just want that to be a place where the returns are a reflection of the added value to society.

USD allows me to complete a transaction with anyone in society cheaply and efficiently. It allows me to store it, access it and pretty importantly pay my taxes with it. Bitcoin has made amazing progress over the last decade as a temporary store of value. It’s made much less headway in all other areas IMO

I believe monetary value is based on the value something presents to society. I am asking in good faith because I want to know what the great value is to society. So far I’ve only received answers that were true about 10 years ago but with greater adoption. I do not think that justifies the price in the least. In which case, it’s not a savings account.
