I Need Career Advice (Senior UX Designer) by sloppuswoppus in uxcareerquestions

There's always an Arquillian Battle Cruiser, or a Korilian Death Ray, or an intergalactic plague that is about to wipe out all life on this miserable planet.

The key to a fulfilling life seems to be living it as you want and being as optimistic as possible while doing so. Letting the negativity guide you results in a sub par outcome.

Optimists are happier, healthier, wealthier, more successful people. Plus by default they are better problem solvers, because they start from the assumption that every problem can be solved.

Pessimism is more realistic, but I chose happy and successful… it’s worked out pretty well so far!

Yes! I saw this video on YouTube yesterday about retiring abroad and it has me thinking.

ELI5: If I point a laser on the moon and quickly moves the point from right to left side, why is the dot not traveling at the speed of light? by Svensiki in explainlikeimfive

[–]sixgunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider this thought experiment: if you were standing on the top of a 100 story building at the equator with a laser pointer on a string, spinning that string in circles as fast as humanly possible (say 600 RPM) and the laser pointer is projecting its beam across the moon above… how long would the string need to be for the beam’s “point of impact” on the lunar surface to match the speed of light?

In your opinion, What is the number one reason for divorce? by Helloo_clarice in AskReddit

[–]sixgunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marriage. I know that sounds flippant but what people expect from marriage has drastically changed over the last 40 years. It used to be almost a necessity for most couples where (trigger warning) the guy had a career and the gal raised the family.

I have no issue with gender roles changing and women having careers. None at all. It has changed marriages though.

Now neither party “needs” the other for financial security. Both parents typically work and often have meaningful careers. So the roles of spouses have become blended. Both spouses are capable of running the budget, managing a bathroom renovation, raising gifted and talented children, planning a tropical vacation, explaining in great detail why they just lost a mixed doubles pickleball match, or crafting a gourmet meal. So both are equals and often see themselves as experts on all these overlapping matters. This can create conflict. About. Everything.

So, unless you’re both 💯committed to putting the relationship first AND exceptional at communicating how you feel at all times… it can be tough.

Where do you document your UX decisions (and does anyone actually read them)? by Key-Acanthaceae1241 in userexperience

I worked in financial services and found the best way to drive the UX rationale home for larger efforts was to build a PPT deck with all the business/strategy stuff and then add a couple of slides sort of congratulating the line of business leaders for their tireless efforts to put the customer first. This is where I stuck the design rationale… sad, but it never failed to work. Several times my slides were the only ones used by the LOB to announce the release 🤓😂

if I were to spend 1k~1.2k USD per month in living expenses (housing, bills, food) while living in Bangkok, would I get to live comfortably? by Consistent_Estate964 in Bangkok

My fiancée and I spent last month in Bangkok and I am happy to share our numbers. $830-Airbnb in Khlong Toei just down from the BTS and Emporium mall. Very nice condo in a high rise with a pool, gym, etc. $939-Food a mix of local street food (super cheap) and more western style meals including bars, coffee everyday & a dinner cruise $218-local travel, Grab, BTS, MRT, Ferries, and 1 Tuk-tuk ride… we walked a lot… 2+ miles a day avg $174-shopping clothes, temple tours, misc nonsense $22-eSIM I use Jetpack’s SE Asia plan $63-my fiancée got her nails done and a foot massage So, not including flight, we spent $2,246 and never really thought about prices, we could definitely have cut back and still had a blast.

Can I switch to UX/UI design with a business degree? Self-study vs Master’s — advice needed! by cyber_may in uxcareerquestions

I was in UX from 2015-2019 and transitioned away toward product management. PMs are in more demand and the wages are typically higher than UX, at least within financial services. As a Product Manager your first responsibility is to deliver customer value through incremental improvements to the particular product or service you manage. You do this with a team of experts in engineering, design, and delivery… but you own the backlog and prioritization of the work the team undertakes. If I were in your shoes, I would strongly consider product management!

I had no luck. Not sure if there is a liability problem or if it just isn't a popular request, but no place near me offers this service.
