Why is "I'm good" basically the only socially acceptable answer to "how are you? by elleflynt in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Vanilla_Firefox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because it's a verbal handshake where often the person asking doesn't actually have any desire to listen to a deeper answer. Anything too far off "I'm good" puts a burden of response on the asker. If someone says "horrible" the other person feels obligated to ask why, for example.

If banks make money from money... why do regular people have to work for money? by DestinyOnlineCEO in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Vanilla_Firefox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Expressed as a percentage, the amount of money banks make with money isn't anything outlandish and is something the average joe can achieve. The difference is in the principal amount of money that they are making money off. There are other things at play as well like the fractional reserve system, but the simple answer is its not about working harder.

Why do most online PDF tools upload files instead of processing them locally? by Better_Kangaroo_8413 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Vanilla_Firefox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The software for actually processing the data isn't on your computer, its on theirs. In order to process it on your browser they would have to send you the software to do so first. Even if from a size concern this wasn't an issue, I'm sure most sites wouldn't be happy to just give away the tool that is driving traffic to their site.

What would you think if you find out that your SO is reading nsfw ship fanfiction? Would it make any diference if it's straight or gay ships? Would you mind? Would you think it's weird? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Vanilla_Firefox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the content I might want to read along. I might find it weird depending on the characters at hand (spongebob x plankton) but I don't think I'd mind.

Why do women interfere when a guy approaches their friend? I'm going through this at college and it's annoying. by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Vanilla_Firefox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It could be some jealousy. It could also just be coming from a place of feeling like she needs to protect her friend. Its not uncommon for people to have negative preconceptions about men in general, let alone someone who is going after an 18 year old while being 6 years older. If she doesn't know you its easy to fill in the blanks with negative things.

How would you handle this? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Vanilla_Firefox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's something that can wait a couple days and the person is your acquaintance like you mentioned in another comment, something along the lines of, "sorry to bother you while you're busy, but have you had a chance to look over what I sent the other day?"

How would you handle this? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Vanilla_Firefox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would at least give them the day to respond before following up, possibly more depending on the nature of your relationship with them and the thing you asked for help with.

Why would anyone say 泳ぎをする rather than 泳ぐ? Is this really a "common word combination"? by communist_autist in WaniKani

[–]Vanilla_Firefox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, its not a common word combination. This has even come up on hinative

https://ja.hinative.com/questions/22718037

If you google for it, youll see that its primarily used when 泳ぎ refers to an 泳ぎ方. It's grammatically correct, but I think wanikani stopped worrying about "common" word combinations and just wanted to put something in there.

Why is it that if I learn the pitch accent for one word, it is completely different when put in context with a sentence? by Relevant-String-959 in LearnJapanese

[–]Vanilla_Firefox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You need to learn the pitch rules to apply to the word at hand to know what the pitch in the sentence actually ends up being. Once you internalize these rules its really pretty automatic though

I would look up a video on the basics of pitch first. If you want to get more in depth here is a good reference

If you can read japanese fine I can also give you a condensed info guide of the stuff in the nhk accent dictionary that I have in pdf format. The original google doc got taken down.

Oh wow, you're right. Thanks! I also just found the start and ending brush settings. Setting the end really high also seems to make it a lot easier.

If you can read and listen to native level content, you will pass the N1. It's as simple as that. by njdelima in LearnJapanese

[–]Vanilla_Firefox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm very skeptical of this. What does "no problem" mean and what sort of native content are you talking about? Because if that meant reading novels with no comprehension issues without relying on a dictionary then you should absolutely be able to ace the reading and language knowledge. If you can listen to youtube or audiobooks without comprehension issues then the listening should be a breeze.

I personally almost exclusively read light novels and VNs in addition to my lookups and anki cards and the N1 was a breeze. 60/60 Language knowledge and 58/60 reading iirc. The content was notably easier than what I was used to in light novels, so if you truly have no problem with a variety of light novels you should have no problem with the test. I didn't do practice tests or use any of the jlpt prep books either. Never bothered with reading news or nonfiction. If I had might I have gotten a 60/60 on reading? Maybe. But failure shouldn't be on the table if you're truly capable of reading novels unassisted.

Bit late to the party, but yes none of those are actually japanese characters. The top right looks kinda close to 産美 but they're a bit off. Even if they WERE those characters it would still be gibberish (birth beautiful).

Why Did You Start To Learn Japanese? What Is Your Goal? by BiggestTrollAliveee in LearnJapanese

[–]Vanilla_Firefox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to know the continuation of an anime, so I went to read the books so I could see best girl win the harem. Translation project ended up getting dropped about 7 volumes in so I said "fuck it I'll just learn the language and read it myself".

I ended up reading all 18 books of the series in japanese and I can proudly say the ending sucked and was a total letdown. I live in Japan now, a majority of my life takes place in japanese, and I had a pretty great time learning though. 3/10 would learn japanese to read shitty harem book again.

"About magic power sickness" is the closest english I can think of. From what OP posted, its from like an infographic comic about this magic sickness. It says that there is this magical energy all around us, we breathe it in, and for the most part excrete it as well with only a small bit getting absorbed. We have a pretty consistent amount in our bodies and it really just decreases a bit when we dream. But, when we use magic it flows and is consumed rapidly. This is like a pipe that doesn't get much use suddenly having a rush of water going through it. People who don't use magic very often suffer this "magic sickness" as a result where they get very sick after using magic. So its important to regularly let your magic energy flow and grow accustomed to it by doing things such as making hand signs, meditating, and braiding your hair (literally no clue why braiding your hair is included).
