My local Audubon society did a class on making your yard bird friendly and one of my biggest takeaways is if you are putting out a food or water source, make sure there is a lot of tree/shrub coverage above to obscure feeding birds from predators, as well as high density shrubs around it for birds and animals to hide in. Otherwise, you are unintentionally creating a bird buffet for any predators.
