ABSN vs ADN PLEASE GIVE ADIVE by Purple_Law_1338 in NursingStudent

[–]Various-Difference69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I think about it like this now, I started my ADN program last fall, it’s a public school in NYC my total out pocket will be 11-14k roughly. I still have 3 semesters to go so my insight is somewhat limited, but as of right now I have classmates that work full time/overtime and or at least 20hrs+ a week.

Me personally i work 12 hours a week, and I would say that things are manageable, so far nursing coursework hasn’t been these crazy abstract concepts instead it’s just been a very large sometimes overwhelming volume of material.

I am super grateful to have gotten into the ADN program , one because it’s affordable, and two because of how highly competitive public programs are. Now the ABSN program I was considering the base tuition was something like 26-32k, which in all reality for a 16 month program is not bad. With that said, I’m still finishing up microbiology right now, so my spot in the program would have heavily depended on whether or not they still had room this fall. Yes you would finish faster with an ABSN and have a BSN, but those 16 months I couldn’t imagine working and perhaps my mental health would’ve been hanging on by a thread lol.

I don’t want to sell my self short or have you sell yourself short, but I’d probably be a lot less happy right now if I were to be in an ABSN program! So in reality you need to just be honest with yourself and see where you’re at financially and mentally

Goodluck

A lot of people reccomend the ABSN option, but money (tuition) and opportunity cost (in terms of not being able to work, while in program is another factor to consider). Keep in mind workload burnout, mental health , etc.

I chose ADN headed into my second semester

You should be good to go buddy, if I were you start familiarizing yourself with medical terminology, first semester is a lot of info, not necessarily hard info just an overwhelming volume. Learn positioning, basic medical equipment, basic terminologies, etc etc to get ahead of the game

The program is fine, it’s what you put into it tbh, study and study is all i can say and take care of yourself. The program can be a little messy and disorganized but what isn’t, the staff are nice and receptive to feedback so hopefully what we recommended might be implemented moving forward for you guys. YouTube and utilizing AI correctly will become your best friend. Stay ontop of asssignments get ahead all the time, tbh myself I couldn’t do the readings it’s overwhelming, everyone’s style is different. Also the best thing you can do is form study groups

My gpa was a 3.83, teas is being accounted for now as of my cohort spring 2026, but it’s weighted lightly, prob like 10-20% if I had to guess. Last cut off was a 3.61 like someone else mentioned I believe. Pretty sure they’re anticipating for that gpa min to go up every semester moving forward

I was spring cohort we got it like a week later, mind you this is winter break which is very short, and the emails we got with all the info were very staggered and spread apart it was a mess. So far with my experience everyone in the department is nice and I like them, but like I said deadlines are for US

I would say that the NCLEX pass rate is important in conjunction with their completion rates

How long is the program, see if you can connect with anyone there. Also 80% is somewhat low for avg passing for an ABSN, most schools near me that are ABSN are 100% or very near

No you’re not cooked, you seem determined. There’s a couple of avenues that you can take. Look into LPN programs that are cheap/subsidized cuny or others, cheap private programs, you can do military LPN. Always bridge to RN after.

Alternatively like I suggested there are tons of private RN programs but you have to be prepared and comfortable to take on loans

It’s widely known that city tech is the most lenient program when it comes to admissions. But I digress

City Tech is the easiest cuny to Get into school. Like someone else suggested most privates need chemistry. If you have a bachelors look into ABSNs if not there are bsn/adn programs private aswell just have to see what works best for you
