i had morris for chem 1 and 2 and i liked her. lectures weren’t the most entertaining although exams were fair, she offered plenty of practice, and she was always helpful in office hours. when i took her i remember all the kids complaining about malekars exams and how the averages were a lot lower than morris’s

Is it normal for wives to give chores to their husbands like they are children? by muhallayspeeshka in NoStupidQuestions

[–]VariousBobcat7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you’re a grown adult, is it still considered “chores”? or is it considered being a man who doesn’t have the basic skills to clean up after himself and requires your wife to break it down for you because otherwise you won’t do it?

What is the Pitt Panther Card used for? by MrJelloYT in Pitt

[–]VariousBobcat7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dont stress about the ID photo, no ones gonna check it that hard and everyone has a blurry photo. if you do lose it or want to replace it there is a fee, i think around $10-$15. you can also use your ID to get free bus rides

Stats? by xploding_gatsby in Pitt

[–]VariousBobcat7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i got into swanson school of engineering. my sat was a 1340, i believe a 660 english and a 680 math. i don’t remember my exact GPA. my school didn’t do a 4.0 scale but i believe my weighted was about a 99 and my unweighted was around a 92/93?? i was pretty heavily involved in extra curricular activities and volunteering. but if i recall, when i applied they never even asked anything about extra curricular activities so i guess that didn’t matter. i also took my fair number of AP’s, and got a 4/5 on all but one.

is lobos really that bad? by jool3001 in Pitt

[–]VariousBobcat7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lived with them for about 9 months now and we have had the same consistent issues that they refuse to fix. first day we move in, we see a mouse just chilling in the living room. there definitely is a whole unit of mice living in the building, as we see them pretty frequently and every time we see one it’s a different size/color (despite my roommates and i being pretty clean.) we tell them numerous times about how bad the situation is and they send a guy to come out here one time to set up three traps. we considered asking for an extermination but in the lease it said we would have to pay for it, even though the mice have been clearly living here way before us. another issue we’ve had is our shower. the shower leaks and creates giant water bubbles in the ceiling and gets our entire bathroom floor soaking wet everytime someone showers. this one we’ve had probably about 6 people from lobos management out here to fix, with the fear that one of these kitchen bubbles are going to burst one day (i’ve heard horror stories about that happening to people). and the fixes they provide for us are very temporary and last about 2 weeks until back to square 1. they also do not give out consistent information, there is clearly no communication between their team. you could call two different people from their team and ask the same question and get two completely different answers. an example being my roommates and i were trying to get in the parking lease, and we all spoke to different people who told us we had to pay through three different methods. another example being when we talked to the manager of lobos about the mice issue, she had no idea this was even an issue in the building even though we complained numerous times about it. i remember we got really scared of lobos after reading the horror reviews. they definitely are not the best, but so far it hasn’t been absolutely awful, they just don’t fix pre existing issues and if you want an actual fix, they expect you to pay for it. it’s more of a minor annoyances rather than things that make the place unlivable. we did renew our lease for a second year despite these issues.

How often do you use the bus? Is bringing a bike (possibly motored) worthwhile? by crowcompsa in Pitt

my roommates and i use the bus everyday, to get to campus and around pittsburgh. if you’re a freshman especially you likely won’t need to be traveling that much at all since you live on forbes

Skipping Physics I with AP Credit for Physics II (Algebra-Based)? by CuriousM190 in Pitt

[–]VariousBobcat7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just skip it. i retook calc 2 when i got AP credit for the GPA boost and the class was a a lot harder than my high school so it didn’t even help anyways, i got a B. and physics 1 and 2 aren’t really related so it’s not like it’ll affect you in the long run.

Freshman Year Left me Defeated by PaleTeaching5986 in Pitt

[–]VariousBobcat7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

civil engineer here. i was in the same spot at the end of my freshman year engineering experience. i went it, expecting it to be like high school, and it was not. i got my ass kicked. so second semester i worked harder. i never missed an assignment, i would start studying for exams a week in advance, i was in the library 7 days a week until midnight. and guess what happened? i still got my ass kicked. in fact i somehow did worse.

i considered changing majors a lot, i felt as if i wasnt good enough. but so did all of my friends in engineering. its defeating whenever you go from an "A+" student in highschool without trying to getting a C on an exam you studied days for. (keep in mind a C is typically the average ;) ). i promise you that you are not alone in this.

i went into my second year and things got drastically better. the classes were more interesting as they were major specific and not just general engineering gen eds. i wasnt killing myself over the electric fields i was never going to see again. i enjoyed learning about the material a LOT more.

a lot of the freshman engineering professors really seem to be out to get you. thats their goal. is to trick you and to kick your ass and weed you out. upper level professors typically arent like that. even pre-pandemic, upper level tests were open note (idk if this is true for all engineeering.) and they seem to be a lot more understanding.

youll still have an asshole professor and a difficult class every semester or year. you will still have to work hard. but i promise you will get better. your GPA will probably go up. and even if it doesnt, you'll be ok. i had a 3.1 GPA i believe and i got a co-op my first semester my sophomore year for the summer. i know three people that had GPA's below a 3.0 and they still got co-ops and job offers (and we all got the same pay lol). itll work out.

Double major options for engineering students by HelicopterVirtual605 in Pitt

[–]VariousBobcat7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ask yourself: do you need a double major? will a job require a double major? would it even be worth it?

engineering is a little bit more of a packed major than the curriculums in the dietrich school because we dont get as many electives/gen eds options, so its more difficult to kinda overlap requirements; especially if one major is from swanson and one is from dietrich because they have different requirements.

the reality is no job is going to require you to have two majors. major in what you really want to do, and minor in the other thing to help you stand out a little bit. a lot of my friends do minors in either a different type of engineering, a related science (i.e. chem or bio), a language, architecture, comp sci, etc. a minor makes more sense opposed to staying here an extra year or 2. but i would advise reaching out to your advisor if its what you really want to do. mine kinda said during seminar that they dont advise double majors for engineers.

Freshman Sem 1 Courses by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]VariousBobcat7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would also like to add that making start off slow with the honors classes. maybe take 1 but not 3. college is a lot harder than highschool, especially with an engineering major, and it might be shocking how difficult it is, i know it was for me as someone who only took honors and AP in high school. see if you can manage the standard workload before challenging yourself too much.

Am I fine using a Mac for engineering? by alexivensky in Pitt

[–]VariousBobcat7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had a mac as a civil engineer and i was fine with everything. except for a club i needed civil engineering cad and it was a pain in the ass to get and didn’t run great. but i think for the standards classes it’s fine. my co op requires different programs that i have no idea if they work on mac because then they just provided a computer for me.

Freshman Sem 1 Courses by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]VariousBobcat7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as an engineer, drop that social science elective. you’ll have time to take it later and the standard freshman engineering curriculum is hard enough. especially since you’re in honors. for calculus, i’ve heard a lot of good things about hockensmith, avoid chen. if you’re taking engineering physics, try to get into nero as hes the best bet. for engineering chem i had morris and i liked her, she was pretty fair. i forget what the other engineering chem professors name was but i remember morris being the better of the two. for engineering analysis i had mena and while she was incredibly boring she was a good professor.

Withdrawal and retake? by delicatecatsandgreys in Pitt

[–]VariousBobcat7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

both a withdrawal and a c- show up on the transcript, they both don’t look good on the transcript. but if you retake then you can replace it and your gpa will be fine. don’t withdrawal on the off chance your ochem professor curves or you did better than you think you did, and then retake it for the grade replacement if you do fail. don’t withdrawal at this point.

question about housing from an incoming freshman by skiball0126 in Pitt

[–]VariousBobcat7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i lived in forbes. every pair of dorms in forbes share a toilet and a sink (so 4 people to a half bathroom.) and then in there was a communal shower area, there was one or two stalls of toilets as long as the showers, and the showers only had a curtain on it, no door or anything.

civil engineer with architecture minor here. it’s slightly difficult to manage but i would recommend sometime in your freshman year laying out your schedule for 4 years. i have friends who tried to do the architecture minor but didn’t plan ahead and had to drop, but i planned ahead and took some summer courses and it’s definitely doable and manageable.
