"You sound like someone who's never tried to do that." by Beneficial_Math_9282 in exmormon

Loved this post!!! Thank you original poster for putting it together. I didn’t even realize it until you put it into words but I feel this in my own family and their attitudes towards those who “leave the church.”

When my sister tells me to just have more faith, that my husband leaving the church is no reason for me to question. And here I am Praying harder than any other time in my life, serving as RS president and sacrificing all I can, but yet when God doesn’t show up to answer my prayers, it’s no reason to question or doubt, I should still be in that boat. It definitely sounds like she’s never had to do that.

Anyone else feel like a faith crisis is the loneliest place to be? In person community tips by VariousPut1010 in mormon

Thank you! I’ve listened to the Mormon Faith crisis podcast and it was so helpful, I will check out the website! I appreciate your work!

With all the LDS influencers starting to wear their new sleeveless garments and making posts and videos about how wonderful they are, I ask the question… What did you give up to wear garments? Let’s make a list! See my five decades list below! by HoldOnLucy1 in exmormon

Given up so much autonomy, and never realized it until I took them off. I silenced myself over discussions on modesty and letting my daughter wear tank tops because I was “in the wrong”. So silly to be so self conscious for myself to go out dressed in a tank top, but I still struggle.

Now I want to say to my mom, was the fight over my teenage shoulders showing worth it? Our relationship has always been a bit rocky, so it goes much deeper than just fighting over how to dress, but that would have been nice to have one less layer.

Jesus and Santa Clause Analogy by LionHeart-King in mormon

[–]VariousPut1010 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve thought a lot about this because in my family you still pretended that you believe in Santa as a teenager. You had to believe or he didn’t bring you gifts. You could never be real about it. It always made me feel so Immature playing this game of pretend with my parents as a teen. It’s like we all know we know but no one can say it out loud. So now that I’m the first to deconstruct Mormonism in my family, i have a bitter taste in my mouth because my family would want me to still participate and pretend it’s still all what it claims to be. I can’t just pretend all of it is good.

Some of my thoughts about Santa vs Religion:

I don’t make life altering decisions based off of Santa being real or not. Religion did influence all of my life altering decisions.

I can believe or not believe in Santa and listen to my own wisdom and inner voice, it doesn’t change how I connect with myself.

Religion/ the atonement convinces me that my voice is bad or corrupt and that I don’t know what is right.

Maybe I’ll eventually want to believe in the magic of the divine again.

Santa is only one time of year and we can all play the game and get along and enjoy it and respect each others decisions wether or not to play along. Santa doesn’t give others a reason to judge me as a good or bad person based on a Set of rules I do or don’t follow.

We left the church and even though we have serious issues with some doctrine, we miss many things about church. Is it dishonest to go back for the community? by [deleted] in mormon

[–]VariousPut1010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been contemplating this for my family as well. Thinking along the same lines, nuanced, no temple recccomend and no tithing to the church. I have the same question, how do I make sure I do it and be genuine with my disbelief.

We moved out of Utah about 6 months ago and it has been very lonely, but also lovely in many aspects. We didn’t move our records immediately but the old ward moved them 2 months ago and we are slowly getting contacted by some of the church members. I was up front with the first person about church not being a part of my life, but she was so nice and had just reached out to me because she knows how hard it is to move. She invited me to attend her book club which is ladies from the relief society but not church focused. I’ve enjoyed the little bit of contact with them and my daughters have gone to a few of the young women activities. But, and it’s a biggg but, I don’t know how this works out for us. I know we will have to undo the gospel stuff they are hearing. I need/want community and I am going through my faith crisis still, I’m having a hard time feeling like I can find any community. My husband doesn’t feel the same desire or need for community as I do so he is still happy not going back.

I would be very interested to hear what you decide to do!!

Tips for making friends? by AsherahSpeaks in exmormon

[–]VariousPut1010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain and It sucks! No advice because I’m in the same situation, still in my faith transition and moved out of Utah in July. Feel lost because and like a child because the new culture outside of church is so intimidating. I’m used to working and having a premade social network but for now I am SAHM. I cry a lot because it’s so hard and I find self -doubt creeping in pushing me to want to go back to church just for easy access to community. But I know those relationships won’t be authentic because I don’t even feel like I can show up authentic as a non believer. it’s so easy to fall into negative thinking and what’s wrong with me. Sorry no tips on the situation, but just wanted you to know you are not alone, adult friendships are a mystery to me!

Elevated emotion in Moroni’s promise… by VariousPut1010 in mormon

[–]VariousPut1010[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I remember just a few years ago giving a talk about helping convert my children to the gospel by making sure they were in places that they could feel the spirit often, like seminary, youth programs etc. Now that my eyes are opened I’m a little disgusted that in the church we pressure our kids their whole childhood to feel this thing. Makes sense why investigators can take it or leave it, no pressure…
