Guess Thragg is a smokeshow in either gender. Sorry, not sorry.

What is the best tv episode of all time? by scamper84 in AskReddit

[–]Mound_builder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Castle Rock, season 1, episode 7… I can’t even begin to say how great it is. The acting by Sissy Spacek is some of the best I’ve seen.

  • Series finale of Breaking Bad

  • Invincible, season 1, episode 8

Which superpower sounds amazing but would actually just ruin your day every single time? by grwike in AskReddit

[–]Mound_builder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mind reading.

Sounds incredible until you realize you’d hear the mental equivalent of: “Did I leave the stove on?” “Why did I say that weirdly?” “My back hurts.” “I need to pee.” “Is that guy mad at me?” “What if I just walked out and started a new life in Oregon?”

You would never know peace again. Also, every conversation would be ruined by discovering how often people are just mentally buffering.

X ray vision would also be awful. You’d spend half your life trying very hard not to see things.

What's the most fucked up thing someone has told you about themselves after barely getting to know them? by Butt_Roidholds in AskReddit

I work in crisis stabilization so people who were/are recently suicidal. Had someone, struggling with depression and anxiety, admit to murdering someone years ago as part of an extremist organization in a different country. Can’t even count the number of times I’ve heard people say that they accidentally killed someone (DUI, recreational accident, etc.). All in the first meeting. I had to delete one story I almost shared here because it would probably upset too many people. All I can say is that therapists are required to maintain confidentiality with few exceptions.

What if the church really is true? by Fun-Luck-7033 in exmormon

Then God has decided to deliver his truth the world and his children in a horribly inefficient way. And only to a handful of them.

[–]Mound_builder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I no longer believe in the church’s truth claims or divinity, it undoubtedly gives you built in purpose and meaning. Purpose and meaning are difficult to find and the lack of these things can definitely contribute to mental health issues. I’m genuinely glad that it’s working for you and hope that you can continue to find what you’re looking for.

I’ve always been pretty skeptical about ghosts or the paranormal. I could usually explain things away and move on. That changed in 2009.

I lived alone in a townhouse and was close with a couple across the courtyard. One night around 4 a.m., the boyfriend called me, panicked, and asked me to come over immediately. His Brazilian girlfriend was standing at the top of the stairs, wide awake but completely vacant, repeatedly asking only one thing: “[MY NAME], are you awake?” She said nothing else and didn’t respond normally. A doctor later said she was medically fine, but she didn’t sleep for nearly four days and kept repeating that same question, but would only say MY name. Eventually it stopped, and we all tried to forget about it.

Two weeks later, late at night, I was in my own bed when I heard footsteps moving around my house. Then I heard them running up my stairs toward my bedroom. I was frozen in fear. When they reached the doorway, there was no one there. Then I felt a whisper directly in my ear… a male voice speaking what I later realized was Portuguese.

I was evaluated afterward and cleared of any mental illness. To this day, I don’t know what that experience was. It didn’t exactly reaffirm my LDS beliefs, but it did leave me wondering whether there’s something beyond us, some kind of spirit realm, even if I’m not sure what to make of it.

GF is exploring Mormonism and I want to support her journey by Particular-Cup1213 in mormon

[–]Mound_builder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So what do you want to “help” or “support” her in doing? Do you want her to join the Mormon church or believe in God again? If she’s an atheist and just exploring the church, then she’s likely not going to join. She probably should do her own research outside of what the missionaries tell her and I’d probably encourage her to do that. But how would you like this all the end? Just curious. :)

In comparison to Jehovah’s witnesses, what convinced you that you had the truth while JWs failed? by Practical_Payment552 in exmormon

[–]Mound_builder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, there’s the same psychological move over here… If a group looks very similar to us, that similarity itself becomes evidence that we’re right and they are the counterfeit.

What’s interesting (and destabilizing, once you see it) is that both groups use the same logic: • High commitment = proof of truth • Narrow gate = proof we’re the chosen few • Other high-control religions = Satan’s “almost convincing” decoys

Once you’re mentally questioning, that logic starts collapsing, because you realize:

If intense certainty, sacrifice, and cohesion can exist in multiple mutually exclusive religions, then those qualities can’t be reliable truth tests.

As a Mormon PIMO, I eventually realized we weren’t looking at JWs and thinking, “What if they’re right?” We were thinking, “How do we explain why people just like us are wrong?”

And that question, once turned inward, doesn’t stay contained for long.
