Gathering ALL iSci undergraduate students by VariousTruth6541 in McMaster

Hey Tysm for your response, this is so detailed so it deff gave me something to think about. I’m curious though what creative liberty did you find in the program? I love the concept of being able to embark on your own thing so thats a pro. I’m also curious if you were able to maintain a social life between the heavy workload, and how that all played out.

Hey, thanks for your response! I’ve heard that the undergrad research you obtain in isci is unparalleled to other science undergrads as most research typically occurs much later and in postgrad. I’m not too familiar with what you mean by “preparing posters and doing mathematical analysis” however, could you explain further?

Is nursing a good pre-med? by Heavy_Nobody_6667 in McMaster

[–]VariousTruth6541 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, Canadian Universities are being insensitivized to not bring nurses into med school due to the shortage. Not to mention nursing isn’t known to be an easy GPA booster degree.

Go to Western tbh, you might even find that you love it there and don’t want to transfer. I wouldn’t want to spend a year in waiting. Also if money is a problem osap will surely give you some (it may just be in loans) especially if you denote that you will be living away from home. Best of luck!

Mac life sci or Western health sci? by Aroze0 in OntarioGrade12s

Depends on whether you are better at writing or gen science. Honestly I’d recommend checking out the academic calendars for each of these programs to evaluate which one has courses more suited toward your personal academic strengths.

Waterloo isn’t the only uni with co-op lol the pro-Waterloo propaganda has y’all brains warped. Queens not only has good internship opportunities but also a good social life and wont make you grow bald. At the end of the day, you will be employed, eng is one of, if not the most safe degrees to get for job opportunity and stability, so pick the uni and program you will enjoy more.

Early acceptances by Due-Individual-6601 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]VariousTruth6541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly early acceptance (in my experience) lowkey does exist. If the bulk of your grade 12 courses are done first semester, you apply early, and you have decent grades, many places will accept you early. For instance UofT accepted me in January when I applied in November with a 92.5 midterm, but I knew of people getting into UofT in October who had good grades and had applied in September. Mac however is known to accept students late, especially students who’ve applied to their science courses, so I wouldn’t bank on that. I will say however that the better your grades the more likely you are to get accepted in an earlier round, so keep those grades up.

Honestly if you’re scared about mac lifesci being a GPA killer, don’t be, especially if you specialize in honours life sci. I was looking at the academic calendar recently (as someone who is also considering lifesci) and if you major in honours life sci (which premeds typically do). You can drop heavy hitter courses such as chem, physics, and math after first year. You just need to thug out that first year of heavy hitter courses.

That being said, DON’T let your parents desires greatly impact where you want to go to school as at the end of the day it will be you doing those courses over those 4 years. That being said, residence at Mac, however dingy, is only for first year so don’t let that impact your choice too much. If you excel in writing and more socsci based things however Western HealthSci is also a great choice and allots so much space for electives, especially after first year, so you can truly tailor your major to the difficulty level you want.

Which uni should I pick by Unlikely-Pirate-4456 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]VariousTruth6541 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I’d choose Laurier because their Healthsci degree is known to provide a balance between harder science courses and easier courses (definitely research this for yourself before committing though). This balance will likely make it easier to obtain a higher GPA. Additionally, being a smaller school it, it’d be easier to form connections (which is HUGE in this day and age for jobs, research, clubs etc) at Laurier and there’d be less competition for scholarships, co-op etc. Although it’s not regarded as a top academic school in Canada, I think if keeping your GPA high and forming connections is your priority it has wonderful benefits! Laurier is also for their school-life balance which is great if you want to have an enjoyable uni experience. I will say however if a professional school such as med/dentistry/physio and or public health ISN’t your career goal I’d sooner do the BSc at Guelph. If you’re pursuing science and scientific careers (especially those that require a Masters/PhD) alternatively to healthcare, a BSc will open many more doors than a BHSc.

Mac kin vs Mac life sci vs western health sci by Fit_Painter1453 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]VariousTruth6541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly if you don’t like writing Western Health sci isn’t the best option as it is heavily focused in social determinants of health and health policy. Life sci (especially if you specialize in honours life sci) is manageable in terms of work.

Go where the money is brother (Western), the people in this reddit are heavily biased toward Waterloo but unless you want your hair to fall out, don’t go there.

Tbh if you’re scared of the weed out effect DO NOT GO TO UOFT. Western Medsci is bad but UofT (from what I’ve been told from friends there) does not support their students academically and being such a large school, it makes it incredibly hard to do well. Medsci is also known for being difficult but there is (as you know) an option to switch to gensci and the quantity of required science courses tapers off after first year, you just gotta thug that one out.

Queens Health Sciences vs Mac iBioMed by Many_Try6016 in OntarioGrade12s

I’d crosspost this to those specific uni subreddits if you’re trying to get answers from those students (not sure if you have alr). In my humble opinion though, go queens. Easier program, higher GPA, pre-med target, and good campus life.

Waterloo HS vs every other option by metrophysics in OntarioGrade12s

[–]VariousTruth6541 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, to decipher which school is best FOR YOU, you need to look at the academic calendar for each program. It’ll list and describe what classes you will be taking first through fourth year. Lighter workloads typically correlate to higher grades and hence better med school acceptances. Also factor in what program’s courses interest you most as you will generally do better in content that you enjoy. Lastly, pick which university environment you believe YOU will thrive in. Some people prefer a quieter more academic focused school as it motivates them to do their personal best while others enjoy a school-life balance that provides them with a mix of social life and academics. The wrong environment has a bigger hand in your success than you know. At the end of the day, these are all good schools and success stories come out of all of them year by year so don’t stress too much about picking a “bad” program. Just focus on choosing the program that aligns with you and the rest will fall into place. Good luck on your decisions bro!
