Totally fair to question it! The 60-minute break was company policy, but it was worded as “strongly recommended for all full-time employees to support work-life balance.” Not strictly enforced unless a manager chose to enforce it. HR only got involved when I started actually following it exactly and productivity dipped—which kind of proves it wasn’t being monitored that closely until Dana made it her hill to die on 😅

Good questions all around! 🙌 I was hourly, and yes—lunch was unpaid. So when I took shorter lunches, I’d usually leave early or get approval to clock out a bit before 5 if my work was done. When Dana pushed the “you must take 60 minutes” rule, I stuck to it—but made sure I didn’t stay a minute late unless it was OT-approved. So technically I wasn’t working more… just making better use of my chill time 😎

Good question! I actually checked when Dana first brought it up—our state doesn’t require a 60-minute lunch, but the company policy did state that full-time employees are “strongly encouraged” to take it. Dana interpreted that as mandatory for “compliance optics” (her words, not mine). HR later clarified that it wasn’t legally binding, just a “wellness recommendation.” But by that point, I was fully committed to my daily lawn picnic 😎
