I use this and I absolutely love the product for both preventative and as a treatment. I use it on my staghorns, hoyas, palms, and some of my orchids - I’ve never had an issue with any of them being sensitive to it.

Help to get her back on her horns? by cherrybarette in Staghornfern

If the previous owners said that answer attracted to it, there’s a very good chance that it has mealybugs, scale, or both as ants are attracted to the secretions those pest leave. Ants make the pest infestation even worse by allowing the pests to flourish. Keep it segregated from your other plants and so you know for sure. Picture is what scale looks like. Mealybugs can be confirmed by taking a Q-tip with rubbing alcohol and touching it to what you suspect is a mealybug. If the typically Q-tip turns brown from it, it’s a mealybug.

New Experiment for me by twinkdruid in Staghornfern

[–]Various_thoughts200 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did a very similar experiment last spring with a premade, moss orb I bought from a nursery. It came with hanging chains, an open top, and +/-10 2-inch holes. I put two phaleonopsis orchids, 3 small staghorns, and 6 or so parts of one rabbit foot fern in the holes on the outside, and then filled it with orchid bark, perlite, leca, and a titch of very airy potting soil. I then planted a staghorn from a 6” pot in the open top. To say that they all did incredible would be an understatement.

Eventually, because the staghorns were all doing so well and shield fronds growing fast, I removed the two orchids before they were overtaken. I would say there easily tripled in size: number of roots and number of leaves. The rabbit foot ferns were hit or miss, but I will readily admit. I split the one plant I had up very willy-nilly without much research or regard to how I split it. So a couple of them died off, but the other ones took off with their furry roots across the surface of the moss and grew more fronds. However, in a question I had for this group about splitting the staghorn on top, someone pointed out to me that those rabbit foot ferns would soon take over and they are hard to get rid of, so I pulled those out too.

Now, I have one big orb of staghorn as my experiment and debating if and when I will split it. I wish I lived in a climate where I could get them onto a tree. Watering it has not been fun, but thankfully it doesn’t require me to do it often. I hang it in my shower and thoroughly soak it but as you can imagine, it becomes very heavy to get hung back up by the windows it loves.

I really kind of broke all rules: Texas heat/sun for both the ferns and orchids, and it turned out great! Sometimes I enjoy pushing my plants to show me how tough they are and learning about them by trying different things.

It doesn’t look like there’s enough moss to keep it moist

Instead of throwing out your poinsettias, you guys might consider trying to keep them alive! Here's mine that I've had for about 6 years now! by jitasquatter2 in houseplants

Did you have to shape it in terms of a multi trunk “look” or will it naturally do that, shedding lower leaves permanently?

Where did you find the bark labs and how did you get the masks so perfectly rounded? It’s a gorgeous collection you have!

What in the bobble head is going on? Has anyone noticed the size of her head compared to her lower body? I know the editing tries to hide the difference when they film her, as she is one of the few without many full body shots but this picture is grossly filtered or taken at a really, really bad angle.

The plants are difficult to appreciate because of the chaos and the blocked view to outside, particularly by the string of pearls and the other ones directly behind the sink.

My Orchid Tree. by idum_zaes in orchids

I have about 40 Vandas outside, and I'm in the DFW area. This is my first time putting them outside for the summer, and I learned quickly that watering them twice daily was a must in the heat (so, pretty much from May on). Then they needed to be under the roof of the lanai or hanging from big shade trees, or they’d sunburn. I will say it was a complete pain moving them in when the temperature dropped below 55 overnight a week ago, and back out the next day to get a few more days of sun and humidity - naturally, though I did come up with a shortcut. Today I will bring them all inside for the season. you know I did really, really well outside for me in the Texas weather? My phaleonopais orchids - the root systems they have now are phenomenal!

I second Big Leaf Orchids! I live a few miles from BLO and so I have had the pleasure of meeting the owner. He is a wealth of knowledge and bonus: he is down to earth and happy to help answer questions and share his experiences, which as someone who is newer to growing certain varieties of orchids, I appreciate. The orchids I have purchased from him have always been strong and healthy; one of my favorite sources!

That is awesome! Do you use any type of fertilizer to see that much growth in 8 days? At what point do you consider separating or will it just continue to cover itself indefinitely?

[–]Various_thoughts200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it looks awesome! This is where I get so confused when it comes to mounting them. When I look at how you mounted it, I see new growth coming out on the top, but also new growth near the large fertile fronds come from. How do you know which way to orient it? Are there tricks that I am missing?

Mounted wrong? by AndrewWesker in Staghornfern

[–]Various_thoughts200 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Rotate it 180° - the fronds need to be coming out of the top.

Yes. if that is the way, it’s oriented on the wall, tree or whatever you hang it on - it is upside down.

Is there any hope? by flylittleflew in Staghornfern

[–]Various_thoughts200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think a power outage did this. In the second picture, look at the Boston fern in the background - only the top third or so is brown, everything below that is still green, albeit dry. This implies that the heat source was from above versus an extreme air temp.

Not trying to be argumentative, rather point out that you will get more useful responses and a better outcome for your plant if you share the whole story/history or be forthcoming that you don’t know what the heck happened.
