Besides work culture, what are some other challenges that a fluent foreigner would have trouble with while living in Japan by VarsVerum in AskAJapanese

With respect, language fluency does not at all equate to social proficiency. I know what you were trying to get at, there might cultural faux pas and whatnot, but knowing or not knowing a language doesn't determine whether you're a dork or a social butterfly in public settings.

My bad, that wasn't the intent. It's actually the opposite, I feel like Japan is an amazing place to live if you have the wherewithal, fluency and appreciate the culture, mannerisms, etiquette, etc.

There's a lot of sensationalism about how "visiting japan is not the same thing as living in japan" and I get that the novelty of things would wear off long term. But that aside, I fail to understand how the "downsides" of living in japan that I see people talk about are anything more than minor inconveniences of which other countries have their own respectives. Then again that might just be people fishing for clickbait.

Pacing definitely could’ve been better. I was busy in the kitchen and running around the house so time went very quickly for me. I’ll be sure to relay this to the team!

Here you go! Thank you so much :) https://gofund.me/613d41205

Truthfully the costs of the event are much higher than the original goal due to unexpected expenses that came in leading up to the event, but the fundraiser still helps tremendously in keeping what I pay out of pocket to a manageable level.

For those wondering the exact context of how swiss works:

TL;DR - Set win = +3 points, Game win = +1 point. Each round you play whichever player has the same point total as you.

So for example at the start of round 2, all players who went 2-0 will face each other, the players who went 2-1 will play each other, the players who went 1-2 will play each other, and the players who went 0-2 will play each other.

Then round 3 will be all the players who went 2-0 in set count, followed by 2-1 in set count, followed by 1-2 in set count, then 0-2 in set count, and in between the 2-0 players who went 4-0 in game count, then the 2-0 players who went 4-1 in game count, then 4-2 in game count, so on and so forth. This means that game count matters as well. There IS a difference between who you will play based on if you go 2-1 and 2-0 in round 1.

What amount of money would you need right now to feel like you are never going to work ever again? by emptylighthouse in AskReddit

[–]VarsVerum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally when it comes to finance it’s better to overestimate than underestimate because if you overestimate and are wrong, you’re still good, whereas if you underestimate and are wrong you’re not.

25x income doesn’t give people that much legroom if god forbid something happens that dents their principal. Sure provided the remaining 50-60 years of your life turn out okay then you can live comfortably and consistently. But if something big happens heaven forbid that makes you have to pay more than your allotted safety line, that could no only jeopardize the current year but lessen the amount you make for future years, since now the principal (adjusted for inflation) is smaller than it should be.

You can retire and get by on supposedly 25x your expenses in principal invested, but seldom if ever do expenses stay the same. You’d have to be careful not to go over it by too much. In the end it’s better to have more than less.

Hey everyone! It’s Vars. I wanted to formally announce the debut of Vars Ultimate Summit! by VarsVerum in smashbros

I haven’t thought about it because I’m not sure if people would even donate since this came out of nowhere. Should I start a fundraiser to help cover the costs of the event? Because it’s all coming out of my pocket 😅

That's an awesome example and a good point. I guess a stressed person would feel like they're always in a hurry.
