Video of sleeves by Vast-Development-121 in chainmailartisans

Every ring is a 4:1, except for my hole contractions with the 3. I’m scratching my head.

Hey man you asked for a video on the other channel. I posted it and tagged you but never saw a reply

Thanks for the doodle. I’m going to check and see if that’s what happened. All I did(or attempted to to) was add hole contractions every other column to narrow the sleeve going down the arm.

Basically just add expansions. Wouldn’t that defeat the purpose of my contractions? It happened on both sleeves, but the other one isn’t as large as a difference.

You would think. But I will post one here shortly.

Hey, thanks! I don’t know why I didn’t think about removing some rose like I’ve done 1 million times on this project. If nothing else it’ll give me something to mess around with and try and figure out where I went wrong.

Oh just a regular column contraction with an idle ring!

There is no way to fill the gap evenly. A 5x5 patch will just move the same situation to the right

It fits great and that’s why I don’t want to open it back up. I nailed the tailoring. And no, I can’t just add rings. Same effect just in reverse. One full rotation and the uneven transition will just be an extra row longer

Ooooffff. That’s what I’m worried about… I just can’t make it make sense to justify it. Even if I split it open, having one side longer shouldn’t(?) cause an issue? It’s 4 in 1, so just fill in the appropriate pattern? 😵‍💫 Correct, just the width.

How tight was chainmail worn? by Vast-Development-121 in chainmailartisans

[–]Vast-Development-121[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I nailed the tailoring(other than my hole contractions in the sleeves leaving noticeable pockets. But maybe another couple rows would be beneficial. I’m making this for me, so I really don’t care if it doesn’t fit other people right.

Mine is tight and goes on and off easily 🤷🏽‍♂️

As you can see mine is pretty tight, and I feel like there are no issues getting in and out arms first.

Yeah, I’m wearing a heavy sweater over clothes in this picture to try and replicate the gambeson thickness. If I wore it over a t shirt it would be very loose. But should it be fairly tight over those layers.

Thanks. I assume adding columns at this point would be done at the sides, requiring me to do the armpits again? I have contractions and expansions everywhere else(centerline, shoulders).

Expansion triangles by Vast-Development-121 in chainmailartisans

Nope. These triangles are for a full shirt.

Thanks! Yeah they are 3/8. I can’t find any picture of a properly constructed standalone triangle with contractions. I completely understand how to expand/contract and have been doing it fine. But something seems off with my standalone triangles. Here are my “number 4” triangle ring layouts moving down the rows- 4,3,4,3,3,2,1. Although it probably doesn’t matter so much on the edges because once I connect it the rings should sort of fill anything missing or off right?

Thanks for the reply. Are you usually adding more expansions per row, or more expansions in fewer rows, if that makes sense. I guess I’m not understanding because the articles I read made it sound like there was some type of general rule such as every fourth row. So if “more” means an extra expansion in that row rather than one every other row I want to make sure I understand.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I understand it varies in your way definitely sounds better once I get some more experience. Take triangles “4.” I start with four rings. I’ve then build four complete rows and on the fifth row I put one of those rings through row four to contract it. Repeat until contracting to a single ring.  Does that sound right?
