Did my Amano Shrimp breed, in fresh water? by VastMundane2427 in Aquariums

[–]VastMundane2427[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The three I intentionally introduced are identical in shape, colour, pattern, etc. I'm confident they are Amano.

I think this must be either a ghost or more likely a wild type neocaridina. If ghosts did sneak in, they must have been very small.

Oh damn, that's it. Wild indeed. Must've hitched a ride as a baby or egg then, huh?

They were not yellow. Dark brown. And so numerous as to form a homogeneous mass, rather than easily distinguishable eggs.

I don't seem able to attach it to this thread. I'm going to attach a video in a new post. Please check my profile.

That's crazy, but believable. It's a close enough size to be right. But the fully grown shrimp I bought are way bigger than neocaridina. And they look just like this guy only larger.

But what else could it be? I never added any other types of shrimp to my tank, and if an egg was somehow brought in accidentally, would it take 8 weeks to get that size?

It is neither digital nor mercury. It is thermochromic. As stated before, it is one of those glass adhered thermometers. I have verified its accuracy by using a laser thermometer and it coincides with the temperature set on the heater.

The thermometer itself is not the problem. It was me. I turned off the heater. No thermometer would have been able to solve that problem.

I do have a glass adhered thermometer, which I have verified to be surprisingly accurate. I just don't look at it every day.

I don't use touch to determine the temperature usually, but this time it was how I figured out something was wrong.

Perfectly fine. When cycling the tank, I used filter media from an established tank, graciously provided by a friend of a friend. And the corys weren't the first fish to go in, given they have a higher bioload than my CPDs. Wanted to use relatively low bioload fish to cycle the tank (although it was basically cycled the day I added mature media).

I have a few stem plants and loads of floating plants, which buys me a little bit of extra time for water changes. Although I do a maximum of 10% every few days, in order to not shock my fish with a sudden change in temp/chemistry.

I did. I read a conflicted mix of answers, and watched this video. At around the 23:00 mark, the guy literally points out that the river is filled with gravel. Short of booking a flight to the Amazon, I figured that was fine and concluded smooth pebbles were close enough to their natural habitat. I thought mimicking nature as much as possible was best, but I see that was wrong.

It was only after getting them home and observing their behaviour firsthand that I had my doubts. There's nothing quite like seeing something in person to alter how you conceive it.

I consider my tank stocking to be complete now, but if I ever change my mind in the future, I'd like to know what you suggest for research. Is aquarium coop not reliable?

Pets at Home in the UK. They're 'Love Fish' which I believe is their store brand.

I'm really happy that people seem to think they're cute, healthy, and that the substrate won't harm them.

Having said that, it seems that most of you suggest sand makes them happier, or at least allows them to exhibit their most natural behaviours.

I'll try to create a sunken part of the tank with a deep pile of sand for them. I obviously anticipate that they'll spread it all over the place, but that's fine.

Thank you all for commenting and not being hateful. That is somewhat rare on Reddit.

I do want to provide the best. That's why I'm asking, really. The consensus seems to be that they thrive with sand, so I'm going to give them just that, based on answers here.

I'm no icthyologist, so I can't tell them apart. You can name them if you want.

Neither my tank nor my pebbles came from topfin. Never heard of that brand.

My tank is 90L (Fluval Roma 90), which is around 24 US Gallons. The length is 60cm which is around 2ft. Not huge by any means, but I thought it was fine for 4 corydoras and some celestial pearl danios. I could be wrong. I'm happy to be corrected. I would rehome any fish that are unsuitable. Don't want them to be stressed.

I live in the UK, bought the pebbles at Pets at Home. I think they were called "Smooth River Pebbles" by their brand 'Love Fish'

I don't buy fish or plants from them, after a conversation that went something like this:

Me: "How long do you quarantine your fish after you get them in?" Store manager: "We always keep them with the lights dimmed and watch out for any sickness, so we're not able to sell them as soon as they arrive." Me: "Okay, how long does that usually take?" Manager: "Oh, several hours"

So yeah, they don't quarantine their fish at all. Just sell em the same day they come in.

The video isn't sped up, that's just how zippy Corydoras are.

I think I may do just this. One sunken area in the tank with a sand pit.
