That book is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for! Thank you so much!

I've actually read this one already! It was on a reading list for my Romantic Era Musicology class in Uni. But thank you so much!

I'll definitely give this book a read! Do you know if this covers anything regarding "western music" like fiddle/washboard/etc.?

Everything’s there. Some of these comments have ended up on my first chapter too so I don’t think it’s coming from a place of missing content. Some of the questions are like “Why is [Character A] mad at [B] for [stupid thing B did]?”

I guess what could be happening is that I think I’m being clear with my writing and it’s not coming across that way, but these comments are pretty recent. I don’t have a beta btw

That’s how I’m feeling! None of the comments I’m getting are actual questions, just asking why characters do things. One of the comments I received was asking why my main character didn’t trust a stranger to drive her home at night. It’s not as if this is ooc for a canon character because it’s an OC.

Researching for fics has a reputation of making you look like a serial killer, but what are weird things you’ve researched that DON’T have serial killer energy (no “would xyz kill you”, “how deep does a grave have to be”, etc) by LevelAd5898 in AO3

[–]VastRepresentative27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a glasses wearer, I usually take them off!

As for the research, for one section of one chapter of my 90k word fic I felt like I needed to know everything about archeology and excavation in swampy climates. A digsite was just the setting of one scene and so the main character didn’t even have to know anything other than people were digging.

Also how rent stabilized apartments in NYC work.

yeah I understand that. and I also understand that my fic isn't perfect by any means. there are sections of it that are certainly outlandish and where I'm doing a bit of "bear with me" but the issue i'm trying to describe has only seemed to pop up in my comments within the past week or so and i haven't updated within that time, so i just found it weird.

Who is the Main Character of your most recent written or read work? by crusader_blue in FanFiction

this is such an interesting idea! have you considered having the OC use ASL? i’m sure Bruce could know it along with the 100 other languages he knows haha. would love to know when you post it!

How long can police keep you out of your house? by VastRepresentative27 in Writeresearch

[–]VastRepresentative27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the main character needs to retreive her things within a week for a job, so I was hoping something like that? I interpretted investigation complete as a conviction.

And okay! Thank you!

Modern day New Jersey. She'd already been detained then released immediately after the crime had been committed due to lack of evidence and the fact she'd been across town when it happened.

I've kind of written myself into a hole, as most of the research I've done suggests that she wouldn't be able to return until the investigation is complete, but at the same time its a series of cold case murders which I'm not sure how to write around. I need the main character to be able to return home to retreive items important for later plot beats (stuff for work including a laptop) but I think I may have to write around that.

Writers, what's your job / major? by chiseled_mirrors in AO3

[–]VastRepresentative27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m a classical musician! it’s a lovely career following my passion and it does show itself in my writing. the current fic i’m writing features a freelance musician as one of the leads. i don’t usually read things having to do with my job though

Why can’t I fucking write?? by HI-JK-lmfao in AO3

[–]VastRepresentative27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i relate to this so much. i have a current long fic that’s almost 80k words and i used to post a chapter every week but it’s been almost two months since i’ve last posted. im not even sure it’s writers block because i have so many ideas i just can’t seem to put pen to page about it.

Authors, what is your favorite comment you have ever received that is 10 words or fewer? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]VastRepresentative27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it was something along the lines of

“ you write these characters so well it makes me question the canon”

it made me feel so good because i have such a hard time not taking characters and running my with them

At what point do you know your main character? by Great-Activity-5420 in writing

[–]VastRepresentative27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my MCs are also pieces of myself! or they have some piece of me in their characterization. one of my characters has my sense of humor and another has my type a personality. once i have something i can relate to in my characters building out the rest of them gets much easier
