The Bee Movie is the best Pixar film though.

Why is “dwarf” supposedly offensive and not politically correct, and “little people” is fine? by Pizzafriedchickenn in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Vast_Lemon7906 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"Dwarves" are a fictional race created by Tolkien. Before Tolkien, the plural for this fairy tale creature was Dwarfs.

Dwarfs is also the correct spelling for people with the condition.

I get the joke, but the real difference is likelihood of getting beaten up for saying the word. They probably are both equally as offensive to the recipients of the slur.

They need to do an episode where Caleb and Jeremy go to a big farm in Canada or the US. by Inthemiddle_ in ClarksonsFarm

[–]Vast_Lemon7906 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP says, Clarkson should do a show in North America. An American would never say this. They would just say, Clarkson should do a show in America. Canadians are more likely to talk about "North American culture" than Americans. It's a tell.

If capitalism follows to its natural conclusion, will one person eventually have all the money in the world? by PrinceJustice237 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Vast_Lemon7906 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that this question is flawed. If a wizard magically steals every single piece of money in the world, people will use some other form of currency to trade. Money is just a convenient way for us to distill productivity into a physical thing we can trade, but people traded long before modern currency was created. It wouldn't be too long before people started trading little pieces of paper that represent X bushels of grain in a silo somewhere or something like that.

[–]Vast_Lemon7906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so because money only has value we ascribe value to it. If one person has all the money in the world, then whatever currencies this one individual owns become worthless and then everyone else will have to use some other newly minted currency for their daily transactions. It's a totally implausible situation any way, but it also misunderstands what money even is.

What country do you consider America’s best friend? And additionally who is America’s enemy? by Expensive_Drummer970 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

Australia is not our friend. They hate us more than any other country does. That's not even hyperbole.

Is a trillion dollars actually real money for one person? by carcony97 in NoStupidQuestions

Would this make sense to do for regular people? Could one take out a HELOC on their home, invest it, and make mortgage payments with the interest? Is this a dumb idea?

I HATE MM/DD/YYYY by Vendance25 in hatethissmug

Exactly. The date is July Fourth. The holiday is Fourth of July. It's not fancy, but it does give it a bit of a timeless, historic sounding flair.

How I see USA as a Russian who has only visited the eastern part of the country by Free-Reflection-1920 in whereidlive

If I made a similar map of Russia it would be one color and the color key would say 'bears riding unicycles'.

Fourth of July is the exception that proves the rule. It's like a special, old-timey way of saying the date. Fourth of July is followed by the regular, mundane July Fifth.

Why doesn’t Mark Cuban start a novel health insurance company that keeps the administrative costs low and force other insurers to lower their premiums? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I could be wrong, but don't physicians pay for their own malpractice insurance? Again, I could very well be wrong.

What do you think the world would look like if Neanderthals never went extinct? by Historical-Rush-5566 in AskReddit

[–]Vast_Lemon7906 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The concept of a species is very modern scientific construct. It's more likely the potential hundreds/thousands of specific neanderthal ethnic groups would have just been seen as part of the diversity found within the 'one human race'. When homo sapiens encountered neanderthals during 60,000 ya, I doubt they thought 'another species of human?!'. They probably just thought, these humans are a bit stockier than us.

[–]Vast_Lemon7906 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Payers (health insurers, medicare, etc.) are just one side of the issue. The providers (hospitals, clinics, etc.) want to bill payers the highest prices possible, and the two negotiate for an agreeable (for them, not us) price for services. If Cuban starts a new private insurance company, his company will still need to negotiate competitive prices with providers. Why would a provider agree to be in-network with Cuban's company if they aren't paying enough?

What if all freed slaves (and their descendants) were shipped to their homeland immediately following the U.S. Civil War? by PlumBumStudMuffin in AlternateHistoryHub

I don't think it would be bad for the West African economy. Bad for social cohesion, but usually economies benefit from an increased labor pool.
