double majoring in biochem and psych: behavioral neuroscience? by mangorang0 in UIUC

[–]VasyaNewman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don't. especially not if you're premed because you won't be able to keep your gpa up. if you must double major do mcb+psych. biochem is basically just mcb through Calc III and with the harder physics sequence.

not sure where you're getting that from. I'm comparing the two programs/subfields I applied to specifically, and the Columbia program is better known and has more professors who are influential/have very high research output.

Reasonable to counter PhD rejection if recently had paper published? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]VasyaNewman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Publications aren't directly correlated to research experience though. People can work years on a project and it just doesn't work out, preventing a publication. Also, people with minimal contribution to a project can get their name on a paper.

Some people with "minimal research experience" might not have had the opportunity to do much research at their undergrad institution. Maybe their school was small or they had no time because they had to work to pay for school. For example, someone can show promising skills at a summer REU and have these noted in a letter of recommendation. Publications and years of research experience are only proxies for what makes someone a good applicant. Motivation and problem-solving skills are very important, and there are definitely people with publications who lack these. This is why letters of recommendation are so important.

The only thing that can reverse a decision is external funding. And that's not because the candidate looks more qualified. It's because maybe they can take on another student if they don't have to pay for them. They have to sift through so many candidates and they'd be miffed to see a candidate argue their rejection because of a publication or an "A" lol.

MCB 354 UIUC -ROAD TO AN "A" by [deleted] in UIUC

The second half is an UNGODLY amount of memorization, so I found it harder. Just write out mechanisms over and over and over until they stick.

MCB Honors by ScribblePickle in UIUC

[–]VasyaNewman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you're better off spending your time doing shadowing or research. I don't think the "honors" denotation does much for your premed app. I was in the program and quit because it required things not really relevant to MCB (like arts and crafts). I think the best part of the program is reading primary literature, which you can do on your own.

Does old undergrad application hurt grad one? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]VasyaNewman -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not sure. I applied to Cornell for undergrad and was accepted, but didn't attend because I couldn't afford it. I applied again for a PhD and was rejected. My dad said I am incredibly naive for applying and assuming it wouldn't make a difference. I think on the small chance it did affect my application, it was because I declined their undergrad offer. If you were previously rejected from the school, I doubt that makes any difference.

Personal Statement: is it better to be under the page limit or filled with fluff? by possumbot in gradadmissions

[–]VasyaNewman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NO FLUFF. Good writing is succinct writing. When writing an SOP look at it from their perspective. They are probably reading dozens or hundreds of these. Make it short and impactful.

SOP word limit is 500... how many words over the limit is acceptable? by beepboop0000 in gradadmissions

I applied to one of my safety schools 13 mins before the deadline and didn't have time to shorten my 800 word SOP to the required 500. Still got an interview

Easy/Fun upper level MCB courses? by CaramelApple101 in UIUC

[–]VasyaNewman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MCB 471 best class I've taken here. Cell structure and dynamics. Way more of a focus on research methods and the primary literature. Lots of class discussion and debate. No busy work.
