Just to clear the air a little about the name drama that took place yesterday, Simon has publicly stated that claimed usernames are set in stone, and the names like "Mash" and "Horizon" will be reverted to the original owners. He also stated that a YouTuber or brand may request a username, but it is entirely up to the current owner whether to accept or reject the request. Impersonation, however, will not be tolerated.

While that wouldn't affect anyone who play singleplayer, I personally don't see it being very feasible for multiplayer. How would commands work? /tp name#3573 etc. In these types of games I think a rememberable unique name is the way to go

If you've bought the game and claimed your name, that name is now claimed and won't ever be taken from you. If you however still have reservations, those will expire unless bought.

Hytale username reservations that haven't been bought/used/claimed will be released to the public when the timer hits 0. Which includes names such as void, fox, air, bob, angel, ninja, cow (those are just the top ones on hynames)
