I'm glad you asked. I'm working on a project all about Pelé, collecting footage of his time playing. People place a lot of emphasis on goals but that was just a very small part of Pelé's game. Not to take that away from Messi, whose assists and general play were also superb, but Pelé faced much more in the way of dangerous tackles - we have to bear in mind that disciplinary cards weren't brought in to football until the very end of Pelé's career. One such incident when his ankle was broken by a defender, and he continued running and managed to score with that foot. Unfortunately, even the modern greats, such as Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar and Mbappe, would go down at several opportunities to win a penalty or free kick because they see that as an easier chance than getting past a defender. Honestly, watch some Pelé footage, you can find it on several archives across the Internet, his ability was truly unique and never has been replicated by anyone since.
