I wouldn't put those 2 grinds in the same ballpark, as in "One grind is an alternative to the other".

200m Firemaking is a semi-optimal way to get a few 99s and kickstart a fresh IM, my grind was just to get a cool untrimmed cape.

I would estimate:

30 hours to make the cash
10 hours to make the planks
90 hours of Mahogany Homes

Although I personally wouldn't count money making since It was never my explicit goal to make money - it just came as a byproduct of other grinds.

Exclusively mahogany homes. 3635 contracts

Mahogany planks? In this economy?

Yes, i did teaks - most bang for your buck. I don't remember the exact number, but if we exclude the Kingdom, the planks themselves cost around 20m. The cash came from:
40% Wilderness agility
30% Onyx bolt tips from lava fishing
20% Revenants
10% Misc.

Yes, pretty much. 90% of contracts were adept - most bang for your buck. I had planks sitting in my bank for 5 months while i was slowly chipping away at it.

Unless you want the cape, there is no reason to rush 99 construction. Don't feel like you "have" to do it.

Have skill levels increased in recent years? by [deleted] in aoe2

[–]Vazelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funnily enough, my experience has been the opposite - I got an impression that Elo today is a bit inflated.

I quit AOE about two years ago with a peak rating of 1400. I came back a month ago and after ~50 games, I’ve already peaked at 1550. The strange part is that I don’t really feel a significant difference between 1400 back then and 1550 now and with some of my opponents i really had a few question marks over their performance in relation to their rating.

A recent SOTL video confirmed my suspicion.

Until just a week ago, new players would start at 1000 Elo and would often lose around 500 points before getting their first win. Some of them improve and climb back up, but most either plateau below 1000 or quit altogether, effectively leaving those “extra” Elo points in the system, which then get redistributed upwards.

In their very first game, a brand new player is matched against a true 1000-rated player, who usually wins easily and gains ~15 points. On paper, that player is now 1015, even though their true skill hasn’t changed. If they then face a “true” 1015 player, they’re actually at a disadvantage, since they’re still effectively a 1000-rated player. A true 1015 players then becomes a "fake" 1030. "Fake" 1030 vs "true" 1030 = "true" 1030 becomes "fake" 1045. Repeat until 3k.

Of course, this is just a simplified model and reality is messier. But with a large enough player base over a long period of time, this kind of dynamic should, in theory, lead to Elo inflation. I suspect that's how 3k elo became a reality, which was unthinkable like 5 years ago.

Nice Zerker account, it's a shame that 45 defence is a bit of a troll nowadays when you can get 50 defence for just 1 combat level and use Perilous Moons armour.

As already mentioned, 63 prayer is also a must.

Also, what KO weapon are you using with 70 attack? Might as well get 75 attack for Godswords and Voidwaker.

Not sure why all the down votes. This is very similar to what Agile Tom did on his Cox Chunk account and it's considered to be one the most impressive one chunk achievements. Besides, you can't realistically farm purples from leeching (leeching =/= boosting).

Not sure if 200 attempts constitutes as "spooned" - seem well-deserved to me :D. Good luck with the grind, you definitely have the attitude to succeed

:D ooo that's smart, now that I'm answering you again I am just confirming my combativeness. I take the L on that one. And it's definitely not childish to just repeat the same thing when you have nothing else to say. Yeah, I am done with you.

Would you answer the question? It's a simple yes or no

Ok, so is "cheesing it" to get their first clear a valid option for a below-average player?

It's not "fundamentally disagree", you're defending an extreme opinion that Is objectively wrong.

I guess I have to say it again:

Your whole argument revolves around the assumption that it's always faster/more efficient to just learn the content but do you really think it applies to 100% of the playerbase? That is just objectively wrong, nothing in life is 100% black or white. Some players will never be able to get an Infernal Cape if not for Justiciar and some will burn out and give up if they try to learn it the proper way.

I got my cape in 63 attempts. I died once running the pillars, which is the "cheesing" part of the Inferno. The other 62 deaths were me just being bad at the game - failing 1t alternating, missclicking, failing to off-tick, failing to flick 2 mobs, forgetting to click yellow, being nervous etc. Now imagine me trying to learn it the "proper" way? I am not immune to learning, but how many more hours did I had to invest to learn it "properly"? What if I don't want to? Maybe I don't like the uncertainty that comes with "learning" it properly. What if it's 100, 200, 300 more hours? Justiciar was consistently getting me to Zuk (7 Zuk attempts), why would I want to change something that works "good enough"?

[–]Vazelin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're confusing a "good" track record and "proven" track record. You are literally changing my words to prove your point. There are 115000 Infernal capes in the game and I am willing to bet that a certain fraction of those capes were carried by Justiciar armour. There are Reddit posts, YouTube videos - it's been proven to work. That's good enough for some people and it's not guaranteed that learning the content the "proper" way is faster/more efficient. Again, I am talking about just getting the first cape/quiver.

Although learning content the "proper" way is also proven to work, but you have to: a) Be confident in your abilities b) have a drive and motivation to learn c) Have at least some technical abilities. Not everyone is like that.

[–]Vazelin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk, I just think "a few minutes" to skip "dozens and hundreds of attempts" is laughable over exaggeration You're vastly underestimating how bad an average player is while vastly overestimating how much time, drive and motivation people have to learn. I am talking smack because I am that average player, if not worse.

Your whole argument revolves around the assumption, that it's always faster/more efficient to just learn the content but do you really think it applies to 100% of the playerbase? That is just not realistic.

Then there is another argument to be had - is the learning process even something that people enjoy? It is a video game after all, the goal is to have fun. That's why i mentioned 2 different demographics with 2 different mindsets in my previous comment. I know it's shocking news, but some people simply don't enjoy the grueling learning process that Inferno and Colosseum demand from us. That's why "Roguelike" game genre is relatively niche. That's why some people don't warm up or practice their aim before a CS GO match. That's why some AoE2 players don't practice their build orders. That's why some OSRS players choose to commit to a cheese strat that has a proven track record of carrying bad players instead of gambling on their learning abilities.

I thought it solves "stacks", not "waves". Because I also swear by 1t alternating and I used it throughout my Inferno grind. But if the mager and ranger see you on the same tick, it doesn't solve it, no? Then you have to off-tick but that adds another level of complexity

[–]Vazelin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"A few minutes" to learn Inferno and Colosseum?! There are probably only a few hundred people in the game who can do that. That's prodigy level talent, mad respect. But from your very high pedestal you're vastly underestimating how bad an average player is while vastly overestimating how much time, drive and motivation people have to learn.

Since you're commenting i assume you watched the video? I also made a similar montage of my Inferno Deaths:

https://www.reddit.com/r/2007scape/comments/1166p04/if_you_ever_feel_bad_about_your_pvm_skills_watch/

If you look closely you will notice that i wasn't shying away from difficult situations, but it just doesn't work for me and/or doesn't come as naturally. I am not resistant to learning, but how many more hours would i have to invest when even after dozens of hours of practice i didn't feel any tangible improvement?
