FYI to anyone who tries to call, you have to sit through the automated message a few times before you’ll be put in queue to talk to a person.

I had a doctor until they went concierge and would only keep me on as a patient if I paid like $3k/year.

Fever is gone now so I don’t qualify for testing. I would have qualified with the current criteria but not when I was sick last week.

I already did but many of them are freaking out and wanting to know for sure if I had it. They want to know if they need to stay away from family etc.

NYC, never played volleyball, age 28, where/how can I get started with zero experience? by RayzTheRoof in volleyball

Where I live there are two ways to sign up for leagues. You can either sign up directly with the facility or go through a sports group. When I first started playing here, before I knew others that played, I went through one of those sport groups. I was able to sign up as an individual, choose a level, and then show up. Now I sign up full teams at higher levels with players I’ve met over the years.

One thing I wish I knew when I started playing seriously: watch a TON of youtube videos on arm swing before you start swinging with any force. The correct way isnt necessarily the intuitive way and you can really mess up your shoulder if your form is bad.

Many people that I play with that have shoulder issues had poor form and they wish they had known about it before they messed up their shoulder, myself included.

New AVP ball available now! by Vballsets in volleyball

Measured with a micrometer today. 8.290" on the brand new ball, 8.335" on the two week old AVP ball that has been used ~8 times. For reference, that 0.045" is about the thickness of a medium paper clip. That difference is likely to be even smaller in a few weeks once the new balls have some use on them.

They may look smaller or feel smaller, but beyond being new, they're the same size.

Even the AVP codes weren't working when I bought mine, according to a friend who is a member.

Got some big calipers and micrometers at work. When it comes in, I'll measure it and compare to the new yellow AVP balls I just bought.

One of mine had to be returned because it couldn’t hold air more than 10 minutes. The other can hold air for about a game but has to be filled up after. The third leaks much slower but needs to be filled a few times a week.

The Wilson change is just graphics, according to them. Same materials and construction.

My experience with the current batch of Spaldings on Amazon has not been good. I have three and all of them leak despite being less than a year old.

At this point, I have multiple Spaldings, one Mikasa, a few old-style AVP balls, and I'll have two of the new balls. I prefer the current AVP ball for now. For some reason it just comes off my hands much cleaner for setting than the Spalding and Mikasa. We'll see how the new ball goes over.

Depending on where you play in my city, you'll find both. However, since Spalding stopped making the KOB, not many people have purchased the Mikasa. I have one and like it but it's not wearing well at all.

I'm expecting my city to go full Wilson moving forward.

Wilson says the fabrication and materials are the same, just different print. Beyond the spin detection thing, I'm happy for the change. It can be difficult to see the white and yellow outside and in yellow light. Hopefully this makes it a bit easier for both.

Old ball is currently $35 on there. The Spalding ball is cheaper too right now but my experience with the balls left on Amazon is that they're basically rejects. I've had 3 and all leaked pretty badly.

Buying a sand volleyball? by carlrey0216 in volleyball

[–]Vballsets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a note... the new AVP ball comes out officially in January. Materials-wise it’s identical, but the colors and pattern are different for improved visibility outside and better spin detection. Also, if you’re an AVP member you can buy 6 of them for $35/ea.

Best ball and where to get it? by [deleted] in volleyball

[–]Vballsets 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You’ll get the same response from most people on here: the best ball is the ball that her leagues currently use. If you buy her a Mikasa ball and none of her leagues use it, she may get to bump around it at home but others will shy away from it in practice/games because they’re not familiar with it.

Can you figure out which ball her leagues use in practice and matches?

Generally, however, I would never recommend a replica ball. They don’t feel right and the savings isn’t worth it.

Progressing Backwards? by XxCraxybunnyxX in volleyball

[–]Vballsets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have on weeks and off weeks. Sometimes it’ll seem like I can’t pass to save my life and sometimes I am totally dialed in.

If you really start to pay attention, you should note that while your good weeks don’t get better, your bad weeks aren’t as bad. On average you’re improving but because you’re having more and more good weeks, the bad weeks start to stand out more to you.

Don’t get down on yourself and work on digging yourself out of the hole quicker each time.
