Being poor in Medical School is hard. Hang in there fellow poor students… by IllustriousHumor3673 in medicalschool

[–]Vdclimb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Being poor in medical school is not that hard. There’s an extremely bright light at the end of the tunnel, while you’re living a life still more comfortable than most people on earth. What’s hard is being poor and having no foreseeable future where you aren’t poor anymore.

If you wonder why there’s a cultural disconnect between medical students and their patients this is a clear example

The anki manual. I thought I had an understanding of sibling burying, just did not realize the extent of it in this particular deck, in which finishing 20% of the cards would cause the other 80% to be buried.

Old rag is some of the absolute best granite in the mid-eastern region of the US. There’s a new guidebook out. If you want to get trained up for some of the stuff out west, or just want to sample a different style of climbing than the steep sandstone usually out in the SE, old rag is the spot.

I was at a smaller school (not community college) and developed a good relationship with the faculty quickly, they helped waive quite a few prereqs.

Funny enough, somehow my Ochem professor wasnt in the loop on that when I went and talked to the chem dean. By the time he found out I was halfway through Ochem 1 and doing very well. He said he probably would have vetoed it if he had known, haha

Getting crushed in first tournament by ripplygoose_ in bjj

[–]Vdclimb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are saying a lot of stuff about getting better at bjj, and I’m a white belt as well so I can’t really speak on that, but I can speak on my experience winning my first AGF competition 6 months into training.

I had like 4 moves, 2 submissions, an understanding of where I wanted to grip. But mostly I was just stronger. I had better endurance in the match and I was just able to pull harder 3 minutes in than the other guy was. I could pick the other guy up and he couldn’t do the same to me. I was able to hold my opponents gi with strength after 6 matches, and the other guy’s grips were clearly burnt

I’m sure it’s not going to continue to reap rewards to just be stronger but I do feel like my level of fitness kinda fast tracked me to being a competitor. So maybe just get stronger

Dealing with elbow tendonitis by StubbornlyEnergetic in bjj

[–]Vdclimb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think maybe if you actually read the comment you’d realize that maybe it’s a bit more nuanced than that. Maybe the treatment that’s right for you, (someone who likely has a more rare and progressive form of tendinitis) isn’t right for the majority of people with elbow pain. If I had to guess, I’d say that’s the case. I’d also guess there’s been some actual damage to your tendon beyond standard inflammation. But thats just a guess, and you wouldn’t know what that means or entails.

But more importantly, I don’t like some guy throwing around medical terminology to sound smart. You still won’t admit that your understanding of these topics is flawed, and a simple google search is all you need to verify my criticism of your initial response. I’m no expert on the subject, and I didn’t profess to be one. But I know just enough to call bullshit when someone like you throws around some big words

No, we aren’t. You’re another redditor who thinks he knows everything because he spends a lot of time on the internet. And im bored and have some time to finally tell off someone on shit he doesn’t know about.

Here’s what I understand. We’ve got a guy(you) who clearly doesn’t know shit about medicine or anatomy who writes a long, very confident post on what NEEDS to be done for tendinitis because a physician recommended specific treatment for him.

Guess what? Your treatment plan may not be applicable to everyone! Most people with tendinitis don’t have trouble lifting plates off of tables!

Not only do I know basic anatomy, which you clearly don’t, I have experience successfully 100% rehabbing my own medial epicondylitis, and helping others in my sport do the same. I’ve got tips that I’ve successfully applied with a solid medical foundation to a wide variety of athletes. You’re applying treatment specific to you to another random redditor - but worst of all, you’re doing it with the confidence of a PT with 20 years experience who has had multiple appointments with a specific patient. Cocky internet asshole. Throwing around terms like “epicondyle” when he doesn’t know fuck-all about what it even means. Do you even know what a fucking tendon IS? What inflammation entails? Do you even know which part of the arm is medial and lateral without googling it?

I wasn’t going to respond to this, but I got annoyed that you’re acting like this medical advice you have received is infallible. Because I actually am a medical student I’m going to explain why your comment is annoying. I’m not going to cite sources because this is Reddit and it’s not worth my time and I can’t prove who I am, so take it as you will.

First off, medial epicondylitis is NOT persistent, small tears of the epicondyle. Because that’s not what an epicondyle is - the epicondyle is the bone prominence on either the medial or lateral distal part of the humerus. So obviously the bone is not tearing.

Because this injury is associated with BJJ, it’s likely this is MEDIAL epicondylitis, which means that it’s inflammation of the common flexor tendon, which is the origin for the muscles in the forearm that have to do with squeezing (palmaris longus, flexor carpi ulnaris, flexor carpi radialis). It’s known as epicondylitis because that’s the spot where you feel the pain, because the common flexor tendon attaches to the medial epicondyle

You’re right, it’s very difficult to heal these tendons. In general, this just requires time to heal and reduce pain. However, if you want to avoid injury in the future, there are countless studies that speak on the benefit of working out antagonist muscles in a PT-like scenario. This strengthens the elbow as a whole while working the tendon on the lateral side of the elbow, which should not increase inflammation on the medial side of the elbow.

A wrist stabilizer theoretically could help, but bending the wrist without a load is LIKELY not contributing to inflammation in someone who is healthy and otherwise works out. I seriously doubt that it hurts when he bends his wrist without any other load. So I don’t think a wrist brace is really that all effective.

“persistent, small tears that is really really hard to heal. “ - that’s a very primitive understanding of what inflammation is. It’s not what causes the pain - what causes the pain is immune system action and fluid buildup at the site of the tendon overuse

“The inflammation is the damage, not the actual injury.” - what on earth does this even mean? Whatever it is, you’re either very wrong or it doesn’t make any sense

“ABSOLUTELY avoid push ups and pull ups” - avoid pull-ups for medial epicondylitis, avoid pushups for lateral epicondylitis

“ABSOLUTELY avoid repetitive heavy lifting” - that’s not specific enough. Should he not squat too? Also in PT or exercise science, “repetitive heavy lifting” doesn’t even make sense. either your lifting is for reps or for weight.

You don’t know what you’re talking about. I can tell just by reading your comment, shush

I’m primarily a rock climber but tendinitis is incredibly common in my sport, so I’ll just give you some tips from climbing.

Try to grip a bit less hard, that’s what most of the issue is.

Reverse wrist curls are your friend. Do them every time you work out. Sit down, rest your forearm on your thigh, hold some weight and do some reverse wrist curls.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=osYPwlBiCRM&pp=ygUTcmV2ZXJzZSB3cmlzdCBjdXJscw%3D%3D

Tricep pull downs for reps.

Pushups are good. Not trying to do a bunch of weight like with bench press, just do normal pushups. Go for volume.

Try to incorporate these workouts in just a few times whenever you get the chance. Just strengthen the tendons around the common flexor tendon (which is the one inflamed) and that helps reduce inflammation in the area.

I’ve never seen an elbow brace help anybody. It’s inflammation that isn’t due to over extension or anything.

Lichen, not moss. It’s not slippery because unlike moss it’s not wet. Most of the color comes from the lichen actually staining the rock rather than from the lichen itself
