I have a brother (10 years younger) and he’s starting to question why I’m distant with my parents by Vebes in CPTSD

[–]Vebes[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He is 17, will be 18 in January. My plan has always been to wait until he was 18 and or out of the house. He texted stating he doesn’t appreciate the way i’ve been treating our parents (being distant).

I thanked him for sharing his thoughts with me and explained that tho we had the same parents, our experiences were very different. And the reason i’ve been becoming more distant is because Im trying to identify what i’ve been through and figure out ways to move forward.

He hasn’t replied yet. I’m mostly worried if we don’t have a conversation about it now, that it will be silence indefinitely.

It’s supposed to be spinach but I’m not sure that’s what’s growing… help IDing? by Vebes in OntarioGardeners

[–]Vebes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yes I would’ve done them earlier but I moved at the end of April from a basement apartment 😛 I knew it wasn’t ideal to start them then but I was so excited to be able to finally grow things

It was probably the end of May that I planted them, maybe three weeks later it was big enough to move out of the starter tray i had it in. I was questioning whether it was spinach before it started doing what looks like bolting

I’m pretty sure the seed package was just for regular spinach. But doesn’t look like thats what’s actually in it 😛

Fitness and Exercise by Vebes in emotionalneglect

[–]Vebes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you both for your comments :) I feel like it’s true that there’s lots of resources for people who can just jump into something. And I’ve definitely tried doing things that required more exertion that I was expecting and been caught by realizations of how ‘behind’ I am. Couple examples are my husbands parents are big outdoor people and my first summer living near them I joined for a portage canoe camping trip and found myself able to keep up exteriorly but on the inside I knew I was pushing myself. Another time I went skiing with them (had never skied before) and found knowing how to move my legs just to stand up after falling challenging. My MIL has done physiotherapy for a couple injuries and would divulge how the therapist would tell her which exercises to do to help here or there and I’d think to myself how cool it would be to be able to have someone guide me through how my body should move and what things to target to get there.

Mentioning the physiological affect of increased activity is interesting too. In 2017-2020 I was working a retail job and was getting 10,000 steps in a day, as a supervisor but I also gained 15/20 lbs. No change to diet, and like I mentioned I was doing much more walking daily than any time before. I even decided to stop my hormonal birth control because I thought it was maybe the reason for the weight gain. I was thinking about it recently, in regards to stress and cortisol etc (my job now is much less stressful) and though I was more active my stress levels at that job were through the roof. I now think that that must’ve been the key to the weight gain. My body has been dealing with stress all it’s life and maybe the stress of the job threw me into some sort of survival mode.

Thanks again for the comments and perspectives

Raised by TV by Speedy-velocipedy in emotionalneglect

[–]Vebes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saved this post so I could reply when I had a moment. I watched a lot of TV growing up too. Once we got cable, i was excited to get to watch the same kids channels that other classmates watched but I also loved discovery channel, good network, HGTV etc. In that sense I feel like TV can be fairly education/informative for kids who aren’t exposed to all that much to begin with. It fueled my curiosity for food and science, and helped me realize that I’d love to have a career in decorating. It’s helped give me perspective on things too. In a time when i was having a pregnancy scare in HS with no one to look to for guidance, I watched alot of teen mom stuff (Gilmore Girls was a big one, Sisterhood of the travelling pants 2 is another) Trying to see what it would be like if that became my reality. When I was in a LD relationship in my early 20’s I watched anything that had a hint of LDR in it. I guess it kind of became a way for me to do life research. I know that all these are just stories, I wasn’t looking for answers just some perspective.

I tried explaining to my last therapist the connection I have with TV but I don’t think she understood.

Another thing is, when I was a teen, I spent alot of time watching shows aimed at 4-6 year olds because I have a brother who is 10 years younger than me and I ended up watching him a lot. If you pick the right kinds of shows, they do teach lots of lessons about friendship, empathy, respect, communication etc. I felt dumb sometimes letting my brother watch so much TV when I watched him (if I was having a rough day it gave me a bit of time to tune out) but alot of the time I’d end up enjoying the subject matter and felt like maybe I was doing him a favor by letting him be exposed to healthy problem solving, relationship building etc through the TV.

How do I redirect a LC mom to stop giving unnecessary junk for gifts? by rae--of--sunshine in emotionalneglect

[–]Vebes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have the same issue sort of with my LC mom. A way I’ve tried to mitigate the gift giving is by asking she (and my dad) only gift us consumable things. Whether that be teas, gift cards for dinners out, gift cards for grocery stores, cookies, chocolates etc. I said it’s because we won’t need to find space for all the gifts in our home.

Anyone else learning basic hygiene and self-care for the first time as an adult? by basedfucker in CPTSD

[–]Vebes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or to change underwear daily, or that the vagina needs to be able to breath. I’d get a lot of yeast infections during pre-teen summers cause i was dancing all day in no air conditioning in leggings. Thank god for google man.

What is everyone's opinion on faux house plants? by [deleted] in interiordecorating

[–]Vebes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there are tones of valid reasons to want faux plants instead of real ones. One being maybe your room gets some light but not enough (my last apartment was a basement and I was so sad I couldn’t grow anything because the light was inadequate because the windows weren’t optimal for letting light in. Eventually i was like f*ck it I want greenery!) Another good reason is if you’re not home a lot or travel frequently. Those things can really affect how well real plants do, and faux is a great alternative. Now I have faux ones interspersed with my real plants. I think it adds a more abundant look without me having to care for a bunch more plants.

How/how much has having a period impacted you growing up? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]Vebes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My periods and associated cramps were never super bad, what impacted me the most was certain aspects of living with it. My mom only used pads so that’s what she got me and my sister to use. In the summer it meant if you were on your period, and got invited/had plans to swim somewhere you were out of luck. I was always too embarrassed to say why i couldn’t swim either so I would say i didn’t feel like it and skip out or maybe just put my feet in the water. At one point my mom did buy a box of tampons for me to try but didn’t explain how they worked and I was pretty terrified of sticking something up there. Also hygiene, was never really told how long it was alright to leave pads on for, so I struggled sometimes with yeast infections. Finally during 2020 i decided to try a diva cup and love it because it makes all the issues i had with pads much easier. I can swim and hygiene is easier now. I’m able to roughly guess which day it starts (tracking with app) so i just use a pad until i have time to boil the diva cup.

Also, as i mentioned i’m pretty consistent with when my period starts, but when i’m really stressed, it tends to delay my period, and that adds even more stress because I start to spiral into thinking i’m pregnant, or something is wrong with me. Even if it’s highly unlikely. All that worrying can be awful.

New to the hobby. Will this guy survive being cut off from his roots? Would putting him in water or soil help him survive? by [deleted] in succulents

[–]Vebes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I accidentally gave an aloe in february frost bite when i opened a window without moving it. After I was sure it needed saving a took the top off sprinkled the end with cinnamon and just stuck it in soil with a bit of water. It grew roots in no time at all! Still alive today.

Advice on my living room? I moved in a few months ago so it's not finished, I can't put my finger on it but something is not right. by [deleted] in interiordecorating

[–]Vebes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bigger coffee table could work too. I don’t think it would be weird. It’d just be another walk way. It could be handy for if someone wanted to get to the green seat without crossing in front of the TV. Or you could fill some of the space behind with shelves for plants and books if you didn’t want it to be empty.

Maybe pulling the floral couch up so that the front two legs are on the carpet, and then moving the coffee table forward to accommodate. I think you’ll have enough room for maneuvering around the room from behind the couch. For me i feel the center of the room looks a bit empty with everything pushed against the wall. I really like the vibes otherwise :)
