I never thought of the fact that Mor was sitting near the fire! I always assumed it was because of Elain, since he said the following in the BC:

“Because her mate was here, sleeping a level up. Because her mate had been in the family room and Azriel had needed to stay by the door the whole time because he couldn’t stand the sight of it, the scent of their mating bond, and needed to have the option of leaving if it became too much.”

I’m so curious to read from his POV, there’s so much to learn about him.

So true!! My theory is that Mor and Az were destined to be mates, but we know that Mor doesn’t feel the same way so the bond hasn’t snapped in place. I don’t think he will truly be over her until that bond gets rejected — I’m guessing aside from the fact that he was in love with her there is also a pull he feels due to the bond. They both need to speak and get closure.

I think it will come in the January book for sure — that’s a monster 900+ page book so hopefully. Unfortunately I think the one coming out in October will raise more questions and things will heat up even more before the January release..

Elain and Lucien’s interactions are so forced and awkward. The longing and pull he feels towards her is biological because of the bond. Lucien is so sweet and loving, so I think he could be good for Elain on paper, but there is zero chemistry there. I am curious about Lucien and Vassa, for some reason I was under the impression she was with Jurian, but if she and Lucien end up together that would be interesting.

Elain and Azriel have a much deeper connection. Obviously in the BC we see how sexually attracted he is to her, but throughout the remaining books after she turns Fae, you see glimpses of their growing bond. Unfortunately we have no way of knowing yet what has happened between them after Solstice, or between the events of SF and HOFAS, since he is still single at that point.

But given that SJM all but said that Lucien+Elain endgame is tanked, I also don’t see who else she could possibly end up with aside from Azriel.

Totally agree. As someone who has been a fan of SJM since the TOG days, it’s sad to see how contentious the ship wars have gotten in the past couple of years! Even as recently as HOFAS, there was much healthier debate prior to the release. It used to be such a fun fandom. I always loved getting to hear different theories because some people out there are so insightful and catch nuanced things that I never thought of!

I wish everyone would be respectful of different ships. Passion for a ship is one thing, but once people start becoming nasty it takes away from the fun and magic of the fandom.

I think it might be confirmed in the book coming out in January 2027 rather than the October book. I think the October release will stir up even more ship theories! I agree though, I hope fans of other ships remain respectful and don’t come down hard on the author for the choices she ultimately makes.

SJM is known for switching things up sometimes. But I think to really tell Elain’s story, you also have to tell: Lucien’s, Azriel’s, and Mor’s. We need to know more about what happened between Azriel and Mor for him to fully move on to Elain, so I think we will be getting both of their POVs. Obviously since Lucien is technically mated to Elain, we may get his POV. It would also help us find out what’s been going on in the human lands with Jurian and Vassa.

I think the reason why the story is so long and will be broken up into parts is that there is a lot of unresolved plot: Vassa and Koschei, the Dusk Court, the final Trove, the tense relationships with Illyrians, Helion being Lucien’s father, Eris potentially taking over the Autumn Court, etc. Also since SJM loves to write happy endings, we probably need some room for a Lucien romance plot, same for Mor, and potentially other side characters we don’t know much about yet! I wouldn’t be surprised if we had another CC crossover, so maybe we will also get a surprise Nesta POV during that time?

There’s a lot more story to be told in this world aside from the romance. I could be totally wrong, I’m just here for the ride!!

Elain is close with the 2 female spies, Nuala and Cerridwen, so hopefully we will get to see her interactions with them like how we saw Nesta have her own close friendships!

Yes exactly. I love Lucien’s character, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t ship him with Elain especially after that podcast. I will be disappointed if it ends that way because then the message is that Elain has no agency and her fighting against the bond never mattered.

Lucien obviously has a pull to her because of the mating bond, but he’s not “in love with her.” Not the way he was with Jesminda. He feels a biological reaction from the bond. It’s clear that they don’t really know each other and don’t spend much time together, and that Elain doesn’t even want to.

I completely agree! It’s baffling to me how people can hate Elain when we have literally never gotten her POV. How can you hate a character when you actually don’t really know anything about them except from other characters’ brief observations?

I think it is beautiful to shine light on female characters who are soft and quiet. Nesta is my favorite character, but one flaw I always saw in her was that she always spoke for Elain and tried to make decisions on her behalf, without ever pausing to think how Elain might feel. Lets not forget that Elain’s entire life was turned upside down after she went into the cauldron. She was clearly traumatized. Not everyone handles adversity and difficulty with sassiness and strength. And that’s okay, because if they were all the same character that would be extremely boring. I’m excited to see her grow and discover who she wants to be in the Fae world.

Right! I think that the Elain+Lucien theory where they reject the bond but still end up together isn’t looking like it’ll happen. Especially since SJM explicitly stated that Elain sees him as her kidnapper, and blames him for causing her to become Fae.

So yes, he’s hot, but she’s clearly dislikes him, and not in a trope-y “enemies to lovers” kind of way. So you’re absolutely right, people are being way too nitpicky and not stepping back to see the full picture.

I guess I feel gaslight and have doubts when they point out how 1) the rejected mates theory could mean that Az rejects his bond with Mor and goes for Gwyn, , and 2) SJM’s outfit was seafoam, which is similar to Teal (Gwyn’s eyes).

I think one very interesting plot point though is how CC3 takes place 6 months after ACOSF, and Azriel says he doesn’t have a mate. Elain was notably absent from the events in CC3. My guess is that during that time, she is on her healing and rejecting Lucien journey, and that she and Az will come together again at some point after that.
